I was thinking about switching the forum software from vBulletin (http://www.vbulletin.com) to Invision (http://www.invisionboard.com). My main reason is to fix the horrible lag that's been occuring lately and also the occasional error that have popped up. Remember when Allforums was down for a couple days? It was because of a SQL error caused by vBulletin. Besides which, Invision is free and vBulletin is not. And, IMO, Invision is just better (more organized, quicker, etc.). So we want your opinion before we do anything. What do you think?

Oh, and let me assure you, if we do switch, no information would be lost and downtime would be a maximum of 1 hour.

We won't lose Blib or Mopo will we, I would really miss them(seriously). :D

I tried yesterday to get in, it kept saying I was here but all I could get was a blank screen. I'm all for what ever will work, down time really is no fun especially when it is down for days. Makes a person lose there train of thought then it is hard to get back into the debate.

Truthfully, this lag is annoying the hell out of me. Doesn't anyone else notice it?

The site should be faster now.

Invision is cool software, and as long as the same design could go...sure invision all the way!

I agree, but the damning lag is gone now, so it's not as urgent to me anymore. But I still prefer Invision. :D

I'm sorry but invision is a joke. The last time I looked into that it has over twice as many queries per page load and I'm absolutely certain the amount of features it has are nothing compared to vbulletin. Invision is free and the support you recieve from the community is the open sources usual we'll try to help but its not our responsibility. Itleast if you have a problem with vbulletin the people who work there will respond very quickly and get the problem resolved.

The reason theres lag at all is because the server is windows based as Drew said.. Php and MySql work best on linux - so the only other thing that would possibly speed it up would probably be switching to a asp based forum software? I don't have much experience with those but I know they have some nice ones.. They are expensive 1000+ for the nice ones but I saw a lic. for a $1250 corporate version go for a couple hundred the other day at a forum that sold theres..

Just my 1.50 ;)

The lag seems to be gone - I think what caused it was I had set the vbuletin compression to its highest setting - this makes the page load faster but at the highest setting it takes some cpu to do the compression.

I had the same initial thought as JWB about Invision - but I took a look and Borg is right in that it looks like a really neat board with probably more features than VB, but given that I already bought a VB license & VB works fine - it seems probably best to stick with VB for now.

VB support also very good - when the board was down a few weeks ago due to a mysql db error - VB support told me how to fix it in 5 mins - shame was it took me a day to notice the board was down - oh well.

Well personally my favorite software right now is Burning Board www.woltlab.de (demo www.wbbmods.com) anywho its not the most high performance but it goes so long without anyone finding bugs in it and many things that are hacks on other boards come standard with it..

I'll have to give invision another look but if its like what it used to be then you have to be kidding.. But it has been some time..............................ramble ramble ;)
