Evidently, Liberian leaders involved in civil war are petitioning the U.S. government for intervention involving U.S. troops. So what are everyone's thoughts on this?
My personal opinion is stay out of it. However, the U.S., with the near-fanatical support of many people who post on this board, has recently and diplomatically appointed ourselves to a position as international humanitarians who are willing to fling around our military in the name of "freedom" in other countries.
I'm irritated that we now find ourselves involved in such controversies. We should not involve ourselves in any country's business that is not related to our business. These people should be appealing to the U.N., not the U.S..

Throughout various conflicts in Africa there have been repeated calls for US intervention. Thus far, we've resisted those calls, and should continue to do so. It is a task for the UN, not the US. Several European countries have long term ties to many nations within Africa, and they should be the ones called upon to intervene.

What irritates me is that everyone seems to want us to be "engaged" with the world, and when and if we do, they all complain because America is always trying to push everyone around.

The best compromise really is to act through the UN.

The UN is becoming about as effective as screen doors on a submarine.

Placing American troops in Africa is a mistake. Send in the French. They need to make amends on the world stage, as do the Germans. They're real good at screaming how the Americans don't handle things correctly, well, we'll just sit this one out and let the self-proclaimed "experts" show the world how it's supposed to be done.

What? We don't want to push "freedom" and "liberate" the Liberian people from oppression? So why did we attack Iraq again?

He's just pointing out the ongoing hypocrisy of the U.S. government.

I'm hypocritical? How? I'm agianst U.S. involvement in Iraq and against it in Liberia....sounds pretty consistent? That's assuming you're referring to me as a liberal, which most morons on this board insist on doing.

I wasn't referring to you specifically. And anyway I don't like using "liberal" as a slander, more as a descriptor.
I'm just saying that a heck of a lot of people that didn't want us to get involved in Iraq want us to go running in and pushing around people in Africa.

Well, no one's taking that position on this board, so it's a moot point. However, for whatever it's worth, I agree that that argument would be equally hypocritical.
