"A New Berlin Wall"

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico warned Thursday that the U.S. proposal to build miles of border fence will damage relations between the two countries.
The Foreign Relations Department said it was "deeply worried" about the proposal, which is working its way through the Senate, adding it will "increase tension in border communities."
"These measures will harm the bilateral relationship. They are against the spirit of co-operation that is needed to guarantee security on the common border," the department said in a statement.
The House of Representatives and Senate are maneuvering to speed construction of a 700-mile fence along the United States' southern border aimed at keeping migrants and criminals from entering the country illegally.
A House-Senate homeland security funding bill containing $1.2 billion to begin building the fence could be passed and sent to President Bush before lawmakers depart Washington this weekend.
Mexico's Foreign Relations Department said that only a comprehensive immigration reform would stop millions of Mexicans sneaking across its northern desert and swimming over the Rio Grande into the United States.
"A partial measure that is exclusively focused on security does not deal with reality and represents a political answer rather than a viable solution," it said in the statement.
President Vicente Fox has rallied against the wall, calling it "shameful" and comparing it to the Berlin Wall, which divided Germany.
President-elect Felipe Calderon, who takes over from Fox on Dec.1, has also spoken out against the measure.
There are an estimated 11 million Mexicans in the United States, about half of whom are illegal. Last year, Mexican migrants sent home more than $20 billion in remittances, providing Mexico with its second biggest source of foreign income after oil.

Meh, there's no problem with setting up a wall. The only reason the Mexican gov doesn't want the wall is because the illegal immigrants are feeding their economy.

Better a wall than a 700 mile long X 100 yard wide moat lined with concertina wire, trip flares, claymores and guard towers.
Maybe this will encourage the Mexicans to make some significant changes in the way they do things.

Why not just put a bunch of caltrops coated in cow shit along the boarder? Cheaper than the other ways, and still inhumane!

Maybe this will encourage the Mexicans to make some significant changes in the way they do things.one would hope. But given that they are using terrorists and the military to fight the annual teachers strike I doubt it....

If Mexico gave a shit about its people or enacting consequences for the wall it would pull out of NAFTA. But that won't happen...

You'd think the Mexican government would be somewhat ashamed that all of their citizens want to flee their country so badly, but that doesn't seem to concern them at all.

A new "Berlin Wall?" NO, the Berlin Wall was designed to keep people in. The fence along the Mexican border is designed to keep people OUT! Dammit. Big difference.

This wouldn't be an issue for me if the people coming into the U.S. just wanted to work a bit and feed their families, or if they truly did wish to become U.S. citizens. Both are false. You've got a cadre of these guys coming here who are begining to recall that the Southwest used to belong to Mexico. They don't wish to learn our language, they don't wish to become U.S. citizens. Sooner or later, if enough of them come here, they're going to want to move the border, dammit. The last thing the U.S. needs is "sectarian" violence in our Southwest. Or an Israel type situation.

If the Mexicans wish to come here, work hard, LEARN ENGLISH and become citizens, fine. If not, then they don't need to be here.

This is something that needs to be stomped on, hard. Dammit.

These guys coming here who are beginning to recall that the Southwest used to belong to Mexico.
If your government, meaning that clown in the White House, supports Israel in their claims that that land belonged to them 2000 (read well), 2000 years ago, and was lost through wars, invasions, etc. Then why is it outrageous for you that the Mexicans want their land back?
Maybe, it is because it affects you this time, but when it affects others (the Arabs), most of you don't give a shit!.
I am not Mexican, so I don't really care if they get their land back or not, I am just pointing out that their is no difference with what they claim (some of them), and what the Jews claim, besides Mexicans claim is just close to 200 years old, not 2000.
What was lost long ago, remains lost, that's just part of history. Now, if Mexico ever develops a weapon for which you (US) have no match, and are forced to return that land, Oh well!, it would be something within your rules, since your foreign policy is also based on the might of your weapons, not on justice.

Why is Fox worried?

A court in Pennsylvania a few days ago ruled that Philadelphia's anti-illegal immigrant laws were "unconstitutional".
These laws, a model for other cities, made landlords not rent to illegals, and fire workers that were illegals.

It will be interesting to see how higher courts interpret this ridiculous ruling.

Well, they do bring a lot of money back into Mexico

Maybe we are going at this all wrong. Lets trade land. I'll trade an acre for an acre in Acapulco.
