"Rock Music has come to a standstill. It's not going forward anymore. It only bores me."
STING, singer, on why his new album songs from the Labyrinth features only music by 16th century composer John Dowland
So true... i totally agree with Sting... it IS so boring nowadays.
I heard another interesting quote by Bob Dylan the other day... about how bands are fighting for money from their songs... he said something to the tune of "i don't see why they are fighting for money from music.. it aint worth nothin to begin with"...

I try listening to today's music and usually come away feeling let down. I've not heard a good NEW rock song in so long, I may not recognize one if it comes my way. I grew up on rock & roll, from the fabulous 50's, the beach bands of the early 60's, the British invasion and everything since. I have to wonder just who the bands of today consider to be their "roots".

That is because you have terrible taste and don't bother to seek out any artist that isn't on the s***house radio stations we have anyway.

There are more genres of music out today, but most of modern music developed from stuff from the 90s, which was developed from the 80s, which developed from the 70s....

As an oldster, I find myself getting more and more like my own mom, who'd yell "Turn that damn hippy music off!" or who'd predict we'd end up in the Manson Family if we kept on listening to such degenerate tunes as rock and roll.
But thankfully, Dad liked rock and had quite a collection of early stuff--Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry.
This music is still evolving--compare today's music to the old stuff. And it goes thru changes frequently as bands copy each other, and then a new sound comes out. If you don't like today's music, just wait a few years for it to change again.

So true, everything including music is cyclical. After Buddy Holly's death and such, rock had become dominated by bubble gum bands and began to stagnate. Then the Beatles and whammo! Then in the seventies with disco and such it once again began to stink and BAM! MTV, opened up a whole new can of worms, tapping into creative forces that were just not getting exposure. In the nineties with Hard Rock/Heavy Metal sucking big Nirvanna came along. So it may take a while but eventually something original does come along and rejuvinates things.
For the record I don't think rock is that bad nowadays, my only real complaint is too many bands care more for their soulfull ballads of why life is so hard and not enough of how loud the guitars can go.
