China calls border shooting self-defence

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese troops fired on about 70 people near the country's mountain frontier with Nepal, and one of them died, Chinese state media said on Thursday, partly confirming earlier reports but defending the shooting.

The official Xinhua news agency said the people were attempting to cross illegally from Tibet into Nepal on September 30 when a squad of Chinese border guards discovered them.

The troops tried to persuade the people to return home, but they "refused and attacked the soldiers", the report said.

"The frontier soldiers were forced to defend themselves and injured two," the report said, citing an unnamed Chinese official.

One of the injured died later in hospital "due to oxygen shortage", the report said. Another was in hospital. Xinhua did not say whether the civilians carried guns or other weapons.

This first official Chinese confirmation of the border incident appeared hours after a Foreign Ministry spokesman said he could not verify foreign news reports of a border incident in the Himalayas.

"I've seen the reports about this, but I've no knowledge of the specific situation," ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao told a news conference in Beijing.

Three climbers from Britain and Australia told Reuters on Tuesday that on September 30 they watched Chinese border guards aim their guns at a group of about 20 or 30 people as they prepared to cross an icy pass from Chinese territory into Nepal.

Overseas Tibetan refugee groups, as well as the London-based International Campaign for Tibet, said a young Tibetan nun was killed in the incident, and a young boy may also have died.

Wow.

That's really terrible. The Tibetans have been harassed by China ever since China went red, and what makes this really tragic is the fact that these people aren't exploiting or using China in any other way than to see the Dalai Lama.

On the other hand, in our country, we have people crossing over illegally to use us, exploit us, and take advantage of our system, and what do we do about it? Nothing.

Seen a show on CNN yesterday about immigration.

Anyway,they interviewed an old woman sitting on her porch,white,said her family lived there for generations,her house was in a row of 14,only herself and her neighbour were the last 2 non hispanic in the block,she couldnt and said she wouldnt speak Spanish to her neighbours,so her and her old neighbour kept themselves to themselves,as their kids had grown up and moved out West.Her Hispanic neighbours never spoke English.
So the film crew moved on into town,most of the shops had been bought by these new immigrants,all their signs were in Spanish,'I noticed they werent in English also'some of the shopkeepers were interviewed by CNN,and some couldnt even talk English,as they used an interpreter.

On a plus side 'maybe',theres a big carpet factory in Dalton, Swift Carpets,I think u called it.The owner,an elderly American,said he was glad of these immigrants,as it was the only way his business could expand,as local American kids didnt want the jobs he had to offer.Im sure this same scenario happens up and down America,so is 'white AMERICA' having to give up ground and culture,to expand in the business world.The word 'illegal' was never mentioned during the show.

You're very bright, and given the circumstances, I simply don't understand the societal disconnect in which you've obviously undergone while viewing this problem through an academic microscope. These people don't want to build this nation; they're here to exploit it, PERIOD. If they're so "proud" to be in America, then perhaps you can what explain why they've chosen to fly Mexican flags over ours. This isn't an issue of them being able to fly those flags on our soil; it's an issue of why they've chosen to do it in the first place. What are they trying to say? If they're so "proud" of where they're from, then they should leave. If you consider Mexico your "real" home, then get the fuck out of ours! If all we are to them is a paycheck, then I don't want them here, and neither would Theodore Roosevelt:

On Mexican indepence day at school, the Latino group of kids at school decided to wave a Mexican flag around during a school pep rally. Being that this is in Texas, they were summarily criticized and the American crowd, who began shouting 'USA' repeatedly. Madness!

And at my place of work, we get a lot of ethnic people from all over passing in and out of the doors. Arabian, Indian, Mexican, German, even Russian. They all speak their native tongues to each other, but I am offered a glimmer of hope knowing that they all have learned or are learning English, to survive. We may accomodate Spanish speakers better than 50 or even 30 years ago now in this modern age, but they will have to assimilate, one way or another. The thing to worry about is not the cultural habits of those arrived in America, as we are a melting pot, not a homogeneous society. What should be on our minds is the legality of their presence, as well as the status of our open borders.
