University of Wisconsin researchers have discovered a human peptide which prevents flu viruses from entering human cells. It provides 100% protection in labratory cell cultures. In the story I heard on the radio today, they noted that the University had applied for a patent, although the process of testing and getting approval is likely to take another decade.
Since it appears effective in preventing infection by the H5N1 "bird flu" virus, this is good news indeed.
