hi,

i have a 950 Mhz duron PC, gefore 2 ect, and while playing a game it froze, which was usual enough, however, when i turn it on now, nothing comes onto the screen, but the lights flash on the Keyboard, and it seems if i leave it for a few hours, it will get part way through the boot sequence then frezee up. i have had this problem before when the PC was under warrenty, but b4 i was able to leave it for about 1hr, and it would boot properly again, then the warrenty technicatan told me over the phone to change some settings in the bios. i have not added any new hardware recently, but the motherboard is the only thing remaining after my last problem, since i have upgraded it
Could it be a permanant problem on the motherboad? i have tried replacing memory, and reseting the bios but with no luck, does anyone have any ideas or will i need a new motherboard, as it seems to be this that is causing the problem.

Thanks.

Please tell me, when you turn on the PC, do you hear a series of beeps? Some short some long? Please tell me if you do, because usually, when a computer refuses to even get to the RAM check, it gives off a series of beeps. Please tell me long/short such as:

Long short short long short.

Thanks.

it does not give off any beeps, apart from the usual short beep after it displays infomation about the video card, (if it even gets that far)

i have also checked the 4 on board bios LED lights, which are suppoed to tell me whats wrong if theres a problem using a combonation of green and red, however, these seem to frezze up at whatever stage the PC frezees up, for expamle, if the PC frezzes while checking memory, the lights say the bios is checking the memory, and if it frezees before loading the bios, the lights will display a code meaning its loading the bios, if you see what i mean.

1st -> Check sure the video cables plugged in good -> but 99% sure that its the video card (probably) or possibly the mother board is bad. But really its probably just a bad video card - replace it.

Or you could have cut the power by removing the plug... that works for me. Sheesh, make him buy a new video card when we aren't sure what the problem is. Errors like that at times can be stuck on the RAM, and screws up the boot, erase the RAM completely, and it tends to work. Even though this is a rather old thread...

RAM gets lost when it loses power...nothing can be "stuck" on it.

However, as long as it is still plugged in, there is still electricity running through the computer. It needs to, as the outlet is constantly giving out electricity, and it has to complete the circuit, it only harnesses the power when it is turned on, but the power is still going through... electrons are still in the damn RAM. It is stuck I say! It is stuck!

"Many types of RAM are volatile, which means that unlike some other forms of computer storage such as disk storage and tape storage, they lose their data when the computer is powered down."

"Many types"
So, NI! I knew that most do... aparently I have evil anti-conformity ones. And don't ask me what they are, I'm not in the mood to unscrew things. I just can't wait until they perfect the new ones that use the same process as the hard-drive, magnetic, that way you don't loose everything... That would be neat... shut down the computer in the middle of a game, and power it back up and be in the same spot, they should make that... yeah.
