recently we installed

TDK velocd internal atapi/e-ide cd-rewritable drive

on our Gateway PC. It's a couple years old, Pentium II processor, in fact -- hard to believe that already it's so outdated. Anyhow, we installed more memory also. We thought we had everything researched and that this was going to be a great match, seamless, etc., but ever since then, there's been nothing but trouble! The system going down, having to reinstall Windows (oh, yeah, under MS's clutches, running WinMe). We use this PC as the network server for a much newer nicer laptop, and I know that there isn't a problem there. Although, as I write this, it occurs to me that since I really don't know a whole heck of a lot, I shouldn't say that.

That's the trouble -- I don't know what I should, and sure I do searches and read through stuff about the Bios and networking and this and that and the truth is I don't feel confident about all the missing gaps that would take me more time to learn and work through before I'd feel like I could undo things correctly if I needed to. What I'm hoping to find out is all that the glitches and tricks that you more hip and experienced users know about that don't get included in the regular mainstream instruction documentation. There's got to be certain things that happen on a regular basis or that is the inside info for users in the know, right?

If anyone can help me figure this out, I'd be so appreciative. I'm looking for a sort of list of issues or things to check out, that would say this, this, this, and this is right, and that and that needs whatever. Or a one-stop place with all the info in place where I can figure out what's going on with this thing and what should be going on with it. In understandable terms! I'm not an idiot and can figure things out, but I don't have a background or much experience in this.

Thanks.

All right, what kind of RAM did you buy, did you leave the old RAM in the system, if so, what kind of RAM is it?
