OK, I know some of you tech geeks here are linux enthusiasts and probably wont admit to knowing anything about Windows Vista, but I am going to ask anyway. I am planning on building a new PC. I may want to hold off for a while though becasue of Vista, and more specifically Direct X 10. My question is, will video cards now be able to run DX 10 when we upgrade our systems to Vista, or will a whole new generation of cards be born just for DX 10? I really dont want to pay 2000 bucks for a syatem that will be obsolete in 3 months. Thanks.

I'd wait until the GeForce 8s come out before making any decisions. DX10-compatible is a good idea.

The G80 is expected to be released anywhere from October to November.

Video cards are cheap now. MSI has rebates running the rest of the month. Best deal I've seen yet is a X1900XTX for $276 off of newegg.com. That is hands down the best video card on the market for performance versus price. Geforce 7950s don't give enough of a performance increase for the price, the only reason to get one would be if you were already planning on blowing money on two 7900s. Same with the X1950s. The X1900XTX outperforms the 7900 in everything except NVidia catered games, and even then it's just too close. Frankly, if you want to wait for a hardcoded DX10 video card, price wise and usagewise, it wouldn't be worth it for at least a year and a half from now. I doubt even then. DX10 instruction sets will not work with modern video cards, however, all games and DirectX itself are backwards compatible, and most things will be just operated as DX9c. Who knows when Vista will be coming out anyways, and the price will probably still be exhorbant. DX10 will be quite useless in WindowsXP and useless for games for more than a year. By the time DX10 is actually being used and Vista is widespread, it'll be time for another upgrade. Oh, and looking up the G80, it looks disapointing. Then again, can't touch ATI. Duh dun dun duh.

Oh, and October to January.

cool, thanks blibblob. I was thining that same thing too. If I wait for DX 10 cards to come out they will be back up to 600 bucks a pop, and not many games will even utilze DX 10 to make it worth it. THe 1900xt is a great card (from what I hear) and like you said, cheap on newegg. i THINK i WILL JUST GO AHEAD AND START BUILDING MY pc NOW.
