The Marine Corps is recalling to duty about 2000 Marines who have already served their four years of active duty. After serving that four years, Marines are in the inactive reserve for another four years.

I suspect that this is a prelude to the coming crisis with Iran, just as I suspect that Israel's attack on Hezbollah, and the current increased deployments in Baghdad to take on the Iranian backed Shiite militias are preliminary steps to confronting Iran. Pulling the fangs of their proxy militias will make the confrontation easier to deal with.

Given the response of Iran so far to our demand that they cease enriching uranium by the end of August, I think this fall is going to feature a major crisis on that front. We may well need more troops than we have right now. I predict this will all come to a head just about the time elections are occurring this fall.

It's at times like this that I'm glad my years of service are way behind me. I tried to re-enlist following 9/11 but was turned down because of age.

The US can't do shit about Iran short of nuking it or using a draft. Even if they let another terrorist attack happen there won't be enough sign-ups.

Say Iran gets nukes - what do you think would happen after that?

Israel will intervene.

One thing is clear - the US will not let Iran get nukes. Most of the Arab world will also silently help the US in such an effort.

I just wanted to remind people that Iran is a signatory of the Non proliferation treaty. Under said treaty signers are allowed to pursue civilian nuclear uses. Iran is willing to submit itself to inspections. Other nations have no right to tell Iran it cannot use nuclear reactors for energy purposes. Iran has said that if sanctions are imposed upon it it will remove itself from the NPT. China and Russia will most likely veto any vote for sanctions. Israel is crazy enough, and has enough disregad for international law, to strike at Iran but guess which country is stuck between the 2? Iraq which means more dead Americans, chaos in the region and probably WW3.

If you really believe that about Iran, I've got some land in Florida & a bridge in NYC to sell you - cheap.

Iran is willing to submit itself to inspections.

Then why did they tell the inspectors to shove it three days ago?

Iran will get her nukes and Israel, the U.S. and the other arab countries will do nothing about it. More than likely, she already has black market nukes.

Unfortunatly the US has provided a cheap excuse for expelling inspectors...The US used weapons inspectors to spy on Iraq in the 90's. I'm not saying that makes it excusable, just saying the US's arrogance can run counter to its suppossed goals.

Nobody is trying to stop them having civilian reactors. Lets look at the facts

- They have tons of oil, so don't need a reactor, but putting that aside - they have a right to persue the development of one.
- Russia offered to process the fuel for them, this would remove the risk of building warheads and give them their reactor (which Russia is already building) - They refused
- The EU, US + Russia - offered them economic help, and even offered to build them a nuclear reactor if they stop enrichment. They refused.

The carrot is a very nice deal. They have rejected it - why? The most likely reason is they want a nuke. Not to use, but to put themselves in an untouchable position. I don't blame them, but of course we cannot let that happen.
