Wife needs one-day marriage after drunken divorce (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/world/2006-08/21/content_670221.htm)

KOLKATA, India - Islamic clerics in eastern India have ruled that a woman divorced by her husband in a fit of drunkenness can remarry him only after she takes another husband for one day, police said Monday.
Ershad, a rickshaw puller, uttered the word "talaq," or divorce, three times earlier this month while he was drunk, and when news leaked out in their village in eastern Orissa state, the clerics said they must separate.
"The couple had kept it under wraps and continued to stay together but the clerics ruled that since Ershad uttered the word talaq three times, it constituted a divorce," district police chief Shatrughan Parida said over the telephone.
Under the rules, the woman, who is a mother of three, must marry another man and obtain a divorce from him before she can be reunited with Ershad, the clerics in the local mosque said.
The clerics have said the man the woman marries temporarily must be 70 years of age, Parida said.
Muslims, who constitute more than 13 percent of India's mainly Hindu population, are governed by special personal laws including marriage laws. But in many remote rural areas, it is the local clerics who pass diktats on social issues before they reach the courts. Earlier this year, another Muslim couple in neighboring West Bengal state was told by local religious leaders they must separate after the man uttered "talaq" three times in his sleep. They refused the order and continue to live together.

Church fires teacher for being female (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/nation/4130342.html)

WATERTOWN, N.Y. — The minister of a church that dismissed a female Sunday School teacher after adopting what it called a literal interpretation of the Bible says a woman can perform any job _ outside of the church.
The First Baptist Church dismissed Mary Lambert on Aug. 9 with a letter explaining that the church had adopted an interpretation that prohibits women from teaching men. She had taught there for 54 years.
The letter quoted the first epistle to Timothy: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent."
The Rev. Timothy LaBouf, who also serves on the Watertown City Council, issued a statement saying his stance against women teaching men in Sunday school would not affect his decisions as a city leader in Watertown, where all five members of the council are men but the city manager who runs the city's day-to-day operations is a woman.
"I believe that a woman can perform any job and fulfill any responsibility that she desires to" outside of the church, LaBouf wrote Saturday.
Mayor Jeffrey Graham, however, was bothered by the reasons given Lambert's dismissal.
"If what's said in that letter reflects the councilman's views, those are disturbing remarks in this day and age," Graham said. "Maybe they wouldn't have been disturbing 500 years ago, but they are now."
Lambert has publicly criticized the decision, but the church did not publicly address the matter until Saturday, a day after its board met.
In a statement, the board said other issues were behind Lambert's dismissal, but it did not say what they were.

During these serious times people of all faiths should remember these 4 religious truths:

1. Muslims do not recognize Jews as God's chosen people
2. Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah
3. Protestants do not recognize the Pope as the leader of the Christian world.
4. Baptists do not recognize each other at Hooters.

I remember,as a kid, going to a Holiness church with a friend. Women were not even allowed to speak out in this church.
The father of the family I went with did not allow his home to have a t.v. or radio in it. He also beat the daylights out of any of his kids, he had 12 of them, that did anything contrary to his belief.
When any of his kids came to our home the first thing that they wanted to do was watch t.v, or listen to music(radio).
His kids turned out to be the wildest kids around when away from home.

The father was fanatical about religion and gave to the church monitarily, but made his family live at the poverty level. When he died it was found out that he was a millionaire, his family did not know.
Boy, did their life change after his death and the inheritance. ;)

Every religion has its' crackpots. Christianity has no shortage of them, as history proves, Islam has no shortage of them as we've seen throughout recent times. Maybe the best thing is to burn all the religious text and put those preachers to work doing something else - something that truly contributes to society rather than always asking for $$.

Religion does contribute to society, just because it costs money to run churches and feed pastors, doesn't mean it is necessarily a detriment to society.

Note: Nobody recognizes Jews as being "God's chosen people", but themselves.

What are you basing that onCromagnon? If that is your opinion then state it. Because if you believe that to be a Christian truth your statement is wrong.

Christians recognize Jews as the chosen people. The Old testament is based on the Torah. And no where in the new testament does Christ say the Jews are no longer the chosen people.

Also:
5. Catholics don't give a damn to what protestants have to say or think..
Would that be you personally, or the Catholics you know, or do you believe that to be the opinion of the Catholic church?

In the Old Testament Jews are called the chosen people.
Heck, they wrote it, what else would you expect them to say?
