Well, it turns out I underestimated the Packers. Favre looked really good this week, although the lack of a 49er pass rush helped a lot and the holes that were opened for the running game helped even more. I don't want to read too much into this game, because the 49ers are obviously not an elite team this year, just as the Packers aren't. Both are rebuilding, and both have obvious weaknesses. Still, it felt really good watching this week.
Other than that, what happened to the Colts today? That was as shocking a result as I have seen in a while.

My notes for the week:

1. Brad Johnson performed better and the Vikes won this week.
2. Congrats to LT for setting the single season touchdown record.
3. Drew Brees helped in slaughtering my fantasy opponent this week.
4. Yes, Imagineer, what happened to the colts?
5. Dolphins shut out the Patriots...ouch.
6. Fire Millen!
7. The Seahawks are falling.
8. Are the Saints America's "new" team?

lol, I live in Cleveland, and I am indiferent as how the Browns do. They've never really been good, I believe they are rebuilding themselves, but it's not working out right now. I do like Frye, even though he makes some mental mistakes, but I think he can get better. Give him some time in the pocket to throw and he will give you good numbers.

They were pretty good in the '80's ( the "Cardiac Kids")--very exciting, fun to watch.
Won the NFL championship before the merger of the two leagues in 1964.
And of course, were pretty dominant in the '50s.
But you're right, the past several years have been pretty much a nightmare.

I don't know if anyone here payed any attention to the eagles/redskins game. but they kept focusing on an eagles fan that wore a jersey from the offence when the offence was playing and then changed to a jersey from the defence when the defence was on the field.

Nice line Lionel... brought me a smile to my face..

unfortunately... Manning and Favre are in two ENTIRELY different situations.

I turned on the TV and saw a question "Are the Colts doomed?" with "analysts" and "experts" discussing the topic. Geez, why is it that everyone is all ready to say that the Colts have a snowball's chance at a super bowl run when the freakin team that EVERYONE jacks off... the patriots... lost 21-0 to the Miami Dolphins?? Where is the news coverage on that one? All i have seen is "The colts cant stop the run..OHH MYYY GAAWWDDD!!!"

As a Colts fan, i realize that we don't have a top defense in the league. We give up yards, but normally keep people out of the endzone more often than not. This week was a week where everything went wrong, and i mean everything. They had a punt blocked, they had a kickoff run back on them.. how many games have been won when you have that sort of stuff happen to you? And now for some reason, all the populace and football followers think the Colts will play this bad EVERY WEEK. I say shut your face, sit back, and watch what happens. I still consider the Colts to be a super bowl contender.. I'll be happy to acknowledge that we need to reevaluate our defensive schemes and strategy, but geez this is overkill.

OH.. and i almost forgot..

Amidst all the "Colts lost!! They can't stop the run!!" jibberish... the media has also failed to report on their OTHER favorite jack off.. the Dallas Cowboys.. who got SLAUGHTERED by the New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees lit them up.. hey! The cowboys can't stop the pass!!! Oh my gaawwddd!!! Un-fucking-beleivable. Not only have they not even acted like their favorite team got trashed... but sportscenter does a special on Terrel Owens... WTF? Why not do a special on someone who matters.. like Drew Brees, or Ladanian Tomlinson. Those two guys are twice the players that Terrel Owens is.. and 50 times the men. I have never understood why the media lubes up the cowboys' cocks like they do.. they are the Notre Dame of the NFL.

F them cowpukes. :hitout: They came to Atlanta, went home with a win and a loss of respect.

Another stellar example (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/football/nfl/12/16/cowboys.falcons.ap/index.html?cnn=yes) of good sportsman like conduct took place early in the game:

" ... Afterward, Hall said that Owens spit in his face when the Falcons' cornerback came out jawing on the very first play.
"I lost all respect for the guy," Hall said. "We were kind of walking face to face, walking back to the huddle, and he just hauled off and spit in my face." .....

T.O. toasted both scores with the same gesture. He faced the crowd with his arms outstretched -- that's the `T' -- then clasped his hands in a circle above his head -- that's an `O.'
But what about spitting at Hall?
"I got frustrated and I apologize for that," Owens told the NFL Network. "It was a situation where he kept bugging me and getting in my face. He just kept getting in my face."

Well, the Packers won today, although Favre played so badly they almost lost to the Lions. Throwing to a guy in the end zone covered by four defenders was pretty stupid. Still, he did surpass one of Marino's records today. He is now the all time leader in pass completions. Fortunately, the defense played quite well, and the running game bailed out the offense. They did just enough to win.
Now it's on to a Thursday night meeting with the Vikings. Hopefully the defense will be as good as it has been the last couple weeks. If that happens, and we can run the ball on the Vikings, we should have a chance.

Es, TO is a disgrace to the gridiron.

On a happier note, congratulations to LaDanian for breaking Paul Horning's record.
I never thought I'd see the day when that record was broken.

Speaking of fine sportsmen, LT is certainly one--when he scores a TD, he just drops the ball. No celebration, no silly dances.
Class.

PS I don't play fantasy football, but might try my hand next year. Maybe oldest daughter can give me some pointers--she has finished either first or second in her fantasy league the past several years, and has earned enough money to finance her various car repairs!
Now there's incentive.

Paul Hornung's record for most points scored in a season was one that stood for many years. I also congratulate Tomlinson for beating it. It was set originally in an era with a twelve game season, and Hornung still deserves credit for that. It took Tomlinson 14 games to break it this year. Hornung had the advantage of being both the fullback and the kicker for the Packers. Players who play more than one position are nearly non-existent today.
It was also an advantage to the Packers that Hornung was so versatile. A fake field goal was something that their opponents always needed to prepare for. Hornung could kick, or he could take a handoff from the holder and run. They didn't do that often, just enough to keep it in the back of the other teams mind.

Any NFL team that's an NFL team knows better than to run it against the Vikings, whom are allowing an average of 54.1 ypg (1st in NFL and better than the 2000 Ravens Super Bowl team that allowed around an average of 60). The best chance of beating the Vikes is to throw, throw, throw the ball against the porous pass defense.

Plus, with rookie Tarvaris Jackson reportedly getting the start over Brad Johnson this week, should make for an interesting game on Thursday. The QB of the future for the Vikes looked pretty damn good last week. Too bad I don't get NFL Network, cause I really want to see T-Jack play again.

Imagineer

Normally I would agree with you about throwing the football against the Vikings. However, the Packers have been utterly inept at throwing the ball lately. They are down to playing recievers they have picked up on the free agent market during the week. They have 1 real outstanding reciever in Donald Driver. Jennings is battling a sprained ankle but still playing. Favre is not the Favre of old.
The Packers have had almost no success throwing when the opponents are expecting a pass. They have had some success when they can use play action to set up the pass. That requires some ability to run the ball.
What I am hoping for is a very low scoring game. If the Packers can rattle that rookie quarterback with a good rush, and stop the Vikings from running it could be a good game. I'm hoping for a 7-3 Packers win. If there is much scoring, we are going to be in trouble.

silverbulletkc
12-19-2006, 10:27 AM
A lot of the troubles for the Vikings has been the pass defense; too many holes, soft coverage and the QB of the opposing team spreading the ball around (which really, would get any defense ruffled up a good deal). The Favre/Driver tandem is going to be our biggest threat in the game. Hopefully Brad Childress gets it through his head and goes for tight, even double coverage on the guy (that's how Laverneaus (sp.) Coles burned us last week).

I think the key to the game is the Vikings getting better coverage on the pass and the Packers spreading the ball around. I do agree with you, Imagineer, that it will likely be a low scoring game as well...unless Tarvaris has a breakout game (he really wore down the Jets defense last week) or Favre is quick enough to find the holes.

Well, they did hold Detroit to -3 rushing hards total the last time they played them and, in my opinion, Kevin Jones is a pretty talented RB, but most teams before and after that have opted to pass rather than run because they know its that good (example: against the Vikings, the Cardinals rushed the ball 6 times and threw 51 times). Not to be a homer or anything, but I think the rush defense is that good and the pass defense is that bad.

I thought they couldn't keep ANYONE under 300 yards running anymore?

I thought every analyst wrote them off after the Jacksonville game?

Another impressive performance by Peyton Manning, throwing 4 TD passes and leading his team to a victory Monday Night over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Not to mention, the high-powered bengals offense only scored 16 points.. I mean, that would be more than enough for Tom Brady to win a game, but Peyton is a little better;)

God bless DirecTV. You didn't miss anything, I'll tell you that. That game was just . . . fugly. The difference was that the Packers had one player that could catch or run and the Vikings had no players that could catch or run (on offense). Jackson looks like he might be a decent QB, if someone would catch the balls he throws and if the team would stop penalizing itself out into the parking lot.

I watched the stats on espn.com and managed to catch the last quarter of the game on a local radio station...and I couldn't agree with you more on this one. Both offenses were just plain anemic. Only three first downs the whole game for the Vikes, barely over 100 yds. total for the game, no offensive touchdowns, turnovers all over the board for the pack and winning the game solely on the foot of Rayner.

Having said that, I believe that both of these teams (regardless of what happens to Favre) have some pretty talented components to be very competitive in the not-too-distant future. I look for these two teams to have lots more success either in the next year or two.

Imagineer
12-22-2006, 01:45 AM
If anything, the Packers defense played pretty well. Not as well, however, as the statistics indicate. The Vikings were penalized a lot, and that helped to kill their offense. The Vikings run defense was as advertised. The Packers were able to pass the ball, when the recievers managed to catch the passes.
All in all, it was two teams that were rebuilding, and who had major weaknesses.
As predicted, it was a low scoring game on an ugly weather field with nothing really but pride on the line. It may also have been Favres last home game. At least it was a win.

Well, as to be expected...the Browns/Texans game was the worst in NFL history.

Playoff predictions? I'm going Chargers/Eagles with the Chargers taking it all. Let's hope they can overcome the Schottenheimer curse.

My son thinks he should have been our backup all along instead of third string--we will see!
He was a seventh round pick 2001 and he's started about 8 games and did average.

The problem with Dorsey is that he has no arm what-so-ever.

The Browns are in such a precarious position. Before the season started I was really happy when we traded Dilfer away simply because we'd be able to find out if Frye was our guy or not. Sadly...I personally have no idea if he is or not and I don't think the Browns have a much better idea. With all the offensive line problems, we couldn't get the running game going or really protect the quarterback...which doesn't really make it a fair trial for Frye. Hopefully in the draft there will be a "can't miss" O-liner early or we can trade down and stockpile.

We have GOT to improve the O-line--without that, a team has nothing.
There's rumors we might get Brady Quinn but I'll imagine he'll go to the Raiders. I don't really want him, Frye could be good if he had some protection!

We (49ers) drafted Dorsey in the seventh round. I always liked him, wish we would have never traded him. I think he could be good. He has a good work ethic and knows how to win.

I don't know if anybody caught the Eagles - Giants game today. It was an amazing game which came down to Akers kicking the winning field goal (38 yarder). I thought the Eagles played well, offensively and defensively. Westbrook rushed 20 times for 140 yards and 1TD. That was amazing. And Garcia didn't play too shabby. He was 17/31 for 153 yards, and 1TD. And as for the defense, Trotter was all over Tiki, and Sheldon Brown picked off Eli Manning. All in all, I thought they played really well.

Next, Eagles - Saints, it shall be a great game. In the regular season they beat us 27-24, but I think we have a better chance now. I am curious to see how the defense will stop Bush and McAllister. I think that Sheldon Brown & Rod Hood (Lito dislocated shoulder) will be busy all day. It'll be a good match up. I can't wait.

That will be a good game--I can't wait for the Colts-Ratbirds game. Hope the Colts win 860-to nothing.

Peyton better cut down on his interceptions this next round. This weekend he was the Brett Favre of interceptions.

When the team starts doing this thing called "winning," it will be highly possible. Otherwise they're just a bunch of Spergon Wynns and Les Steckels.

LaDanian threw a cool temper tantrum after the Chargers/Pats game..who would have thunk it--he really went after what's his name and said he was low class --- just like the Patriots coach..

Strong words from LT...and wasn't it nice seeing the Ratbirds lose?

I didnt really have a problem with the Pats until the past few weeks. While I am still OK with Brady, the one I really dislike is Belicheck. It all started with that feud with Mangini and how he dissed him when the Pats lost to the Jets, but when the Pats beat the Jets in the playoffs Belicheck wanted to give Mangini a hug at mid-field. WTF?

Belechik is certainly one of the slobbier coaches out there--he looks like an unmade bed in that sloppy looking sweatshirt hs worn for each and every game for years.
Apart from that, he's ok, but miss the days when coaches got dressed up ala Paul Brown , Tom Landry and looked snazzy on the sidelines.

Now they look like slobs.

Noone on here has to scroll back very far to know my dislike of the patriots...

some of it is dislike because in the past they have been better than the colts...

some of it is dislike because they are the LUCKIEST freakin team i have ever seen.. and its not even pure LUCK, its just having things go your way... it drives me mad.

AND.. i have to agree with Trav.. Belicheck has been a schmuck.. he was PISSED that mangini beat him, and yea if he wanted to prove a point he should have done the half second handshake and ran away when he WON.. but he didnt, he freakin wanted to sit down and have beers with Mangini when he won in the playoffs.

And yes the patriots were "classless" when they mocked the charger players after the pats-chargers game. The chargers outplayed them, the patriots just had things go their way AGAIN. The other part was Marty blew the game by using up all his timeouts and going for it on 4th and 11... geez marty learn to coach!

I hope the Colts can get the last monkey off their back and finally beat the pats in the postseason. We have owned them in the regular season the last two years... but we all know the playoffs are a different animal. I have to say that everyone HAS to be impressed at how the Colts Defense has played this year in the playoffs... Bob Sanders has come back and REALLY made a difference. I just know the Pats are going to try to spread it out on us and go for the 15-20 yard down-the-field passes to their tight ends like they always do.

But if the patriots make it to the super bowl AGAIN.. i'm going to vomit..

I made the point the other day, if you watch the Patriots play, they have THE BEST offensive line in the game.. no question. Brady hikes the ball and just sits there for 5 seconds without even having to move. Some people say he "looks so calm".. i just say he never has to run for his life because he has such great blocking.

I am very impressed with the Colts defense so far into the postseason, Decka. They're pouring it on when it counts. And tho they might not be as good as they were last year, record-wise, they're playing with more heart.

Travh20

Ya, go Colts! They seem scrappier and more hard edged this year. They are running downhill a lot to tire ot the opposing Dand they are getting a lot of pressure on the QB with their front 4 too, which always helps. Throw in a LB or safety blitz here and there and they can really throw Brady of his timing. I hope this is the year Manning gets the monkey off his back and we get to see Belicheck sulking on his way to midfield after the game. Then I hope Dungy rips that ugly grey sweatshirt off of him.
Speaking of ugly grey sweatshirts, Belicheck does have at least 2 of them. I know this because I saw him in a game when he had one on that had the sleeves cut off about half way up the forearm. Looked like he was hot and just took scissors and cut it off.

It's funny that some coaches (Mike Nolan and Jack Del Rio) are wearing all-out suits to some games...and here's Belichick wearing a sloppy-looking, stretched out hooded sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off to look like a cheap immitation of a 3/4 sleeve length shirt. I'd expect a man of his success to dress a little more for the part.

LOL, Belechik is too POOR to wear decent clothes.

The NFL has a contract with Nike(?) or Reebok, one of those sportswear companies, and coaches/assistants have to wear their stuff on the sidelines. When Del Rio got dressed up, it was only for that one game--the NFL wouldn't let him do that for any other game.

They can be kinda controlling......

Kinda like when Peyton wanted to wear black high tops in honor of Johnny U. He wrote a letter to NFL bigwigs , asking if he could, and they said no.
Peyton later said he should have just worn the shoes anyway for one game and taken the consequences--Johnny U is his idol and he's modeled his game after his--both have/had the same work ethic.

So having talked about that, it raises this question: does anybody think that football was better when there wasn't so much corporate interaction? Or, has it been made better because of the money that's been poured into stadiums and on-the-field apparel?

LionelHutz

It's hard to say what the NFL would be like if they didn't try to govern every aspect of it. On one hand, I could see it being better, because idiots like TO would be satisfied just wearing a goofy headband or shoes or something. On the other hand, I could see idiots like TO taking that little bit of freedom and going completely nuts.

And hey didn't you know the 49ers run hand-in-hand with american politics? When Reggie Bush and the Saints played Frank Gore and the 49ers.. the Saints beat the niners.. and Bush outplayed Gore LOL
