Vulgar Americans fail to amuse Britain

July 03 2006 at 06:47AM

London - People in Britain view the United States as a vulgar, crime-ridden society obsessed with money and led by an incompetent president whose Iraq policy is failing, according to a newspaper poll published on Monday.

The United States is no longer a symbol of hope to Britain and the British no longer have confidence in their transatlantic cousins to lead global affairs, according to the poll in The Daily Telegraph.

The YouGov poll found that 77 percent of respondents disagreed with the statement that the US is "a beacon of hope for the world".

As Americans prepared to celebrate the 230th anniversary of their independence on Tuesday, the poll found that only 12 percent of Britons trust them to act wisely on the global stage. This is half the number who had faith in the Vietnam-scarred White House of 1975.

A massive 83 percent of those questioned said that the United States doesn't care what the rest of the world thinks.

With much of the worst criticism aimed at the US adminstration, the poll showed that 70 percent of Britons like Americans a lot or a little.

US President George Bush fared significantly worse, with just one percent rating him a "great leader" against 77 percent who deemed him a "pretty poor" or "terrible" leader.

More than two-thirds who offered an opinion said America is essentially an imperial power seeking world domination. And 81 percent of those who took a view said President Bush hypocritically championed democracy as a cover for the pursuit of American self-interests.

US policy in Iraq was similarly derided, with only 24 percent saying they felt that the US military action there was helping to bring democracy to the country.

A spokesperson for the American embassy said that the poll's findings were contradicted by its own surveys.

"We question the judgment of anyone who asserts the world would be a better place with Saddam still terrorising his own nation and threatening people well beyond Iraq's borders," the paper quoted the unnamed spokesperson as saying.

"With respect to the poll's assertions about American society, we bear some of the blame for not successfully communicating America's extraordinary dynamism. But frankly, so do you (the British press)."

In answer to other questions, a majority of the Britons questions described Americans as uncaring, divided by class, awash in violent crime, vulgar, preoccupied with money, ignorant of the outside world, racially divided, uncultured and in the most overwhelming result (90 percent of respondents) dominated by big business.

I've always said that ignorance is the biggest threat to world peace.

I'd say their assessment is basically correct.
We DO have a lot of crime and are woefully ignorant on World Geography and World Affairs.
But, "divided by class"?
That's THEIR society!

I agree on that point, Rendova. European societies seem to be much more divided by class than american society.

Anyway all stereotypes have a part of truth. The problem is when one starts seeing individuals only through the stereotypes associated to their country.

I aint a pissy wimp,I know, and Africans don't hunt zebras for dinner either. That's precisely my point. The answers given in that poll reflect stereotypes about Americans that many people outside America hold.

I get the impression that their impression of America is entirely based upon their impression of our President. I bet if we had a more touchy-feely President they'd view us in much the same way.

Britain has always had the view that Americans are superficial & un cultured. It's a generalization of course.

The current feeling is mostly due to Bush, who is hated in Europe, actually hated across the whole world & by at least 60% of Americans too.

Er...no, just plain facts

Bush Approval rating

US - 38% (and those 38% are hard core right wingers who are never right on anything anyway :))
Brazil - 2%
Argentina - 7%
Mexico - 8%
Indonesia - 15%
Turkey - 15%
Pakistan - 13%
UK - 25%
France - 20%
Germany - 20%
Spain - 25%
Jordan - 9%
and so on....

The only way terrorism can be fought is by countries sharing intelligence and surveillance & breaking up terror cells. The threat to the US does not come from insurgents in Iraq, it comes from groups organizing here in our country.

After 9-11 the US enjoyed unparralled world sympathy & positive opinion. The war in Afrghanistan was widely supported.

Where are we now? We have been on a miss-adventure in Iraq, an adventure that has ZERO to do with terrorism & it's threat, our allies don't trust us, world opinion of the US is at rock bottom, we hold people without charge in off shore Gulags, it's a sorry story. How could 1 person take such an opportunity and turn it into this? Bush is a national disaster. His team has significantly increased the risk to this country by creating generations of US haters, some of which will turn to terrorist acts. It's mission accomplished alright- if his mission was to screw over the US royal style. Any CEO with Bush's record would have been fired immediately.

Forget Iraq - the sooner we get out of there the better, we can't leave until the job has been done (hopefully we will get the electricity on in Iraq before then - after 3 years they still only have an average of 4hrs electricity a day - check out the weather in Baghdad! BaghdadForecast (http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/tenday/IZXX0008?from=month_topnav_business)), but oh my - what a complete disaster that has been for the US. It's hard to think of a single positive that has come out of Iraq. Meanwhile we can't even protect our own citizens in New Orleans 1400 of which died and countless others had to endure rapes and shootings in the superdome for 5 days (& yes that did happen - I know people who were there)

Soon enough Bush will be gone & hopefully we will have a President that can begin to repair the huge amount of damage to this nation Bush has caused. If we are lucky we might even get a republican that is actually a republican - to top things off Bush has spent more money & refused to veto more Pork than anybody could have possibly imagined.
