Red, the point is that they're all the same. Most of the time, all the people who try to be "counterculture" and make a concerted effort to be "different" look exactly the same as everyone else in their little clique. They try so hard to be nonconformists...but they all conform anyway. It's rather amusing to observe.

So you want to look emo when you listen to your emo music. Here is a hint on how to dress.
the Emo Romulan look - short, thick, greasy, dyed-black hair with bangs cut straight across the forehead, and cut high over the ears. Someone from Time In Malta recently described to me the San Diego Crimson Curse scene as "Spock Rock."
actually, any greasy dyed black hair. Bangs in front and spikes in back is very emo too.
horn-rim glasses, or at least thick black frames.
bald head, furry face (boys only). Goes especially well with horn-rims.
heavy slacks, often too tight and short.
thin, too-small polyester button-ups in dark colors, or threadbare children's size t-shirts with random slogans. Button the collar if you got one.
clunky black shoes
scarves
gas station jackets. This has diffused a lot over the years though, it's no longer exclusive to emo kids. Nowadays, you may want to select a nice corduroy denim jacket.
also classic outerwear but quickly diffusing to normality: the famous Blue Peacoat
barrettes on boys
make-up (male or female)
too-small cardigans and v-neck sweaters
argyle
anorexic thinness. Veganism helps here.

The emo kids I have met are a bit different. Not my style but I think most are searching for a place to be different and not be judged. Although they seem to be going about it in the wrong way and they can't help but draw a negative response from most people who are to closed minded to see them for people first and emo style second. The one thing a lot of them seem to do is cut and this is not something I understand. I have felt pain in my life but not enough to inflicted pain upon myself for the sake of pain. OH well each to their own.

Yeh I basically went with the Emo style dress sense and haircuts because I thought it looked cool. I ripped the piss outta the whole Emo takeover as much as anyone, and thus ripped it out of myself. Still, I liked the look and thus had it for a while.
Cutting isnt tied to "Emo" else it would have only started in the last few years (and we all know its been around for ages). Some kids are upset enough to do it, some arnt.
I do find it funny though that one of the more recuring traits in the emo kid is to be apathetic or in a constant state of angst. Sad little people indeed.
Emo boys try to be as feminine as possible in their looks, whilst girls try to be as alternative japanese as possible.
Its a phase and gives the kids a way of unifying like all trends do, Goth, Skater, Punk, Chav etc etc.

Can I ask where you got that information from?

Sure I work at a government run childcare center. We deal with a lot of high risk teens and their very young babies. Here anyways a lot of the emo kids, or the kids that group themselves as emo do cutting. I also run programs for the teen parents and had a workshop on mental health. The speaker we had in talked a lot about the different types and styles of behaviors and one thing most of the kids spoke on was the need to inflicted pain on them selves by cutting. It was something that they could have control over. I am not saying that is the same every where but it is right here were I live and work.

Of course all Emo kids look the same: there is a guideline on how to look Emo, and it doesn't say "look random and different than everyone else". In fact, it says do this and do that...

they always look sad/depressed in their pictures...
the songs they listen to are always titles something like "stab myself in the heart", "watching my fingers bleed", "heart ripped open", "killing myself silently"... lol
They do not seem to be very happy ppl.
lexapro?
I am not saying all of them are like this, but the majority now-a-days. It has definitly turned into a stereotype.

If only these spoiled brats knew how good they have it. They wouldn't know a hard time even if it was hopped up on viagra. Oh, and that look died out with the 70's punkers and 80's rockers.
Please stop living in the past considering you know nothing about it. That fashion trend died for a reason kiddies.
I probably made one of them cry now. LOL
Anyone hear about the myspace suicide incodent a few months back? They says gays are drama queens, lordie-loo.

Oh? How so? It's been explained to me what emo is, and it's pathetic. Out of curiousity, how old are you? Becasue your response leads me to believe that (and I'm just guessing here) that you are under 20.

Someone who is driven to inflict harm on themselves is not someone to be scorned or mocked, such manifestations of depression are signals of desperation. "Emo kids" are going to have a higher proclivity to be suffering from depression, leading to the stereotype of self-abuse, and is done for reasons other than what you appear to be thinking.

They have no reasons period. If they want to compare notes, I'll gladly oblige.
As I've said, they don't know how good they have it.

Exactly. Most people who whine about how bad they have it have it far, far better than many other human beings. A good dose of perspective is what those idiots need.
