Does anyone know, or know a site where I can find out if Leonardo Da Vinci was a Freemason or not?

As a thirty second degree Mason and former Master of my lodge I can assure you that Leonardo DaVinci was not a Freemason.

The Freemasons are the world’s oldest fraternal organization and have a proud history. Many famous people were Freemasons..

The correct answer to this question is that it is not known whether he had such an affiliation. The exact origin of modern freemasonry is not known, but many believe it came out of an organization of masons who specialized in building cathedrals. If so, it is possible that Leonardo DaVinci was a member. He certainly was involved in the construction of Cathedrals as an engineer and artist. Whether he would have belonged to a guild of masons is less certain. He was not one of the laborers, and they would not neccesarily have accepted him, although they might have. I suspect this will remain a mystery, and therefore open to speculation.

Leonardo DaVinci could not have been a Freemason since the organization did not exist during the time he was alive. The first known reference to Freemasonry is from the mid-1600''s in Scotland. This was the beginning of Freemasonry or what is known as speculative masonry. Before that date we had operative masonry. This was a loose, non-ritualized grouping of working masons, sometimes joined by various wrights. Since Leonardo was not an actual mason he could not have belonged to this group and since the speculative group did not yet exist he could not have belonged to that group.

Leonardo DaVince, despite what Dan Brown intimates, was not a Freemason.

Didn't the Freemasons come to power mainly during the French Revolution?

I know that they are the world's most powerful secret society and, because they are both secret and powerful, and do not require their members to necessarily be a Christian, have been accused of being Satanists and other unsavory things...Hitler came down hard on them, and the Catholic Church is not overly fond of them either.

As for Leonardo, probably unlikely----unless someone is trying to link him to the Illuminati, who, according to some historians, used the Masons as a front.
