Out of several thousand, a few stand out.
The scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" where Indiana Jones rides on top of the submarine for many many miles of ocean going travel and not once does the sub dive or a crew member go on top to see him there, stands out and must rank number one for silliness.

I'd have to agree about a crew member never going up top, but in that time period, subs didn't dive unless they had to.

That is not anywhere near the top, it doesn't even touch a relative of the worst contender. Heck, that's not even silly! For one, why would a crew member go up top, and why would the sub dive (as lionel pointed out). Secondly, he is Indiana Jones, he is supposed to be capable of superhuman feats.

It just seemed dumb to me--it was wartime (the Nazis and all that) and you'd think the British Navy would be prowling those waters, so the sub would dive...it's this kind of thinking which has kept me from being Admiral...why didn't the bad guys just use a different ship?
This has haunted me for years.....
What are yr contenders, Evak, for this dubious award?

I'm trying not to think about it. Many "dumb scenes" are generally action scenes that don't further the plot. Modern movies like the new King Kong or the Matrix sequels excelled at that task. To be honest, there is a number far greater than any I'd attempt to list. Unrealistic action, or poor line delivery (or bad script for that matter) could always be counted among the best.
My special mentions include: any scene with Adam Sandler or Rob Schneider, Arnold Schwarzenegger films when he never runs out of bullets, and any time cops visit a strip club or shady bar during a murder investigation.

Have you noticed how, in movies, a character will just jump in a car and immediately speed away?
They never have to look for their car keys like normal folk...and why is it that people's houses in a movie never have a screen door? They also just always pour you half a cup of coffee--pretty cheap, that.

Don't forget the ubiquitous "turning the wheel wildly while driving down a straight road" maneuver.

Any scene from Plan Nine From Outer Space, but especially those in which the modern spaceship has a shower curtain for a door.

I've commented on how in action movies there is this classic one-punch knock-out maneuver. It's kind of funny because when someone needs to be knocked out for the plot, they will be knocked out by the punching character in one punch. Funny to imagine how the plot would otherwise go if the punching didn't work sooooo well.

I've heard people saying the wire fu scenes in some recent Chinese WuXia movies (Crounding Tiger, Hero...etc.) are silly. (i.e. floating on water) But these action scenes are based on WuXia novels, which are like Chinese Robin Hood stories. The masters are supposed to be able to do all the things you see in those movies.

The genre that contains the most dumb scenes has got to be Horror. Frame after frame horror movies are generally dumb scene galore IMO.

Horror movies take the cake for dumbness.
People stand around to be killed (or sit around--"The Ring"), let a man with a spider creature on his face back into a spaceship ("Alien"), go on the hunt for a fearsome monster with a NET ("Alien"), go into a locked attic even tho they know there's an axe-wielding crazy man in there ( name any dozen grade-z movie), fight off giant spiders, ants, anacondas--and go swimming in a river where dozens of people have been eaten by anacondas------I love them tho.......

Rendova,
Why do the young girls always go down into the basement?
Are they looking to get killed?

Horror movies take the cake for dumbness.
And it isn't because they are "dumb", it is because they are horror films.

LOL, either that, or they're looking for the last jar of Aunt Mildred's preserves, to serve to the kinfolk for dinner---it's very important that they get that!!

In the movie Amistad, set in 1839, there is a scene with John Quincy Adams speaking from the steps of the Capitol. Behind him the modern-day dome is plainly visible, even though it wasn't completed until 1863. That pretty much ruined the film for me (picky, I know).

Ther are many dumb things in movies. Old cowboy films with jets flying by or cars in the background. That is just lack of attention to detail.
On the other hand, the girls getting sliced up in horror movies is pure marketing genius. You see, every time that happens the girls in the audience jump into their dates arms. This was best in the era of drive in theaters. What guy is not going to want to take his date to a movie like that?

Haha. This was probably one of my favorite threads to read. Alot of your posts made me laugh. I hate dumb, corny movies. The movie "Alexander" with Colin Farrell. This movie was incredibly stupid. Bad acting overall.
I agree that Horrer movies are the worst. Like the Friday the 13th movies where you always know when someone is going to die from the "chh chh chh" or whatever.
Or those movies that all have the same type of plot line. Something happens where bob has to raise money or something bad will happen, and he doesn't just do it for him, he has many ppl relying on him. So he (out of pure luck) finds an ad in a weird newspaper or magazine sitting on his kitchen table already open to the ad of some kind of contest. All he has to do is enter and he can win the money. Problem is that he has never done whatever it is he has to do.
I am sick of movies like that. Yes, they can be funny sometimes (Dodgeball & the Stinger for recent examples).
There are so many dumb movies that I can't even sit and pick which ones are dumb. haha
