View Full Version : Driver Distractions
I knew that driver distractions added to accidents. What I took notice of was the number of accidents and near accidents the relative small amount of drivers monitored were involved in.
Of 100 drivers monitored in 241 vehicles, the drivers were involved in 82 crashes and 761 near-crashes, the study was only one year.

For many years I had a Hang Up and Drive sign posted in the top center of the rear window on my pickup truck. While drawing many comments - some non verbal - I don't know that it really affected anyone's behavior.
Daily I see folks driving while not wearing seatbelts, on the phone, kids not strapped in, applying makeup, reading, eating or otherwise not paying sufficient attention to the real task at hand: guiding a 1.5+ ton wheeled vehicle down the highway without hitting anyone or anything. I've stopped counting the number of near misses I've experienced while avoiding some of these knuckleheads. To date, I've been entirely successful.

I must confess to rear ending another car when a young woman in a bikini who was tanning in her front yard stood up and stretched. :drive:

It used to be that when we got into the family car we got in to drive from destination A to destination B and that was it. Other than occasionally yelling at the kids to be quiet attention was totally focused on driving.
Today's car is an extension of the den couch. We have telephones, radios with two bands of AM, FM and satelite capability. We have ipods that play through our speakers. There are navigation systems to look at and listen to. Since there are drive up restaurants we now consider the car an extension of the kitchen table as well so we eat and drink while driving. Women put on their makeup while driving to work so they can save a few minutes in the morning. Men adjust ties. I have even seen people brushing their teeth or reading while driving.

A new craze in Ireland is to set portable DVD players on the dash while driving, which is just nuts.

For my generation, I pay far more attention te the road than most. I always have music going, but I'll generally only adjust it at a red light. I rarely have friends in my car. I never am on my cell phone. I'll sometimes have a drink with me to sip, but if I have food, that's only eaten at a red light. And on top of that, I'm one of the few people anymore who know what a turn signal is.

I eat, drink, talk(hardly ever on the phone), drive with one or no hands, screw with the radio, etc. I once wrote an essay while driving. I've had a very small number of near-misses, and most of those were with a sidewalk or such, and only one accident and he hit me while I was waiting behind a city bus. I multitask very well.

Why do you turn your music down at red lights.

Oh wow, I've never heard that story. I can imagine that you got out of your car and started screaming and cursing at him.

No, I would only care if I actually got hurt. I mean, it's not like there's really a problem, I'm not going to be paying for the damage. He got out apologizing profusely. He was one of the most effeminate gay men I've seen and my girlfriend was with me so I had to calm down two relatively hysterical girls, no time to be cursing and screaming.
In the end, I don't think we ever got the car fixed, it's not really noticable, it wasn't much of an accident.

I eat, drink, play with the radio constantly, drive with one or no hands, and scare the hell out of my little sister...and I have never been in an accident, never even came close.
