Pentagon block on move for safer water
Julian Borger Washington
Thursday March 30, 2006
The Guardian

The Pentagon stalled efforts to clean water supplies contaminated by a carcinogenic chemical despite evidence that it posed a significant health risk to millions of people, it was reported yesterday.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) investigated the solvent, trichloroethylene, extensively used on military bases, after significant quantities were found in water supplies. In its report, published in 2001, the EPA found it to be 40 times more likely to cause cancer than had been previously thought, and recommended tough safety standards to limit public exposure. There was also evidence the chemical played a role in birth defects.

But the Los Angeles Times reported that the defence department, which owns 1,400 bases and other sites contaminated by trichloroethylene (TCE), fought the findings, challenging their scientific basis. Under pressure from the Pentagon, political appointees at the EPA overruled their own scientists, took them off the case and postponed action pending a further study by the National Academy of Sciences, which is due to report this summer.

"The evidence is that there was some monkey business going on between the EPA and the Pentagon," said Gina Solomon, an expert on environmental medicine at the University of California, who was on the scientific board that reviewed the EPA report. "The 2001 report was an excellent piece of scientific work," Dr Solomon told the Guardian.

A Pentagon spokeswoman, Major Susan Idziak, said the defence department believed "a better scientific understanding of the toxicity of TCE [was needed] so that cleanup levels are accurately set at levels protective to public health and the environment."

do you ever get tired of talking out of both sides of your mouth?

I get really tired of quarterpounder babbling about the military. qp is most likely unfit for military service & has yet to post anything remotely positive about the military. This is a prime example of an individual who should say absolutely nothing about a subject in which they have absolutely zero knowledge.

qp is most likely unfit for military service

With what evidence is this assumption made? Besides, even if he was qualified I don't think for a second he'd want to join. :D

has yet to post anything remotely positive about the military.

Good news doesn't sell. Turn on your TV, you're not going to hear about lowering crime rates as much as you are the latest on the day's crimes.

Why should he be required to post something positive about the military in order to win the es seal of approval?

another interesting point is why is it ES sees fit to denounce me for posting this, yet says nothing about the military leaders who are all too eager to poison the troops and their families?...

I guess it just exposes his real priorities

Guerilla, its just that your sudden concern for the troops seems a little opportunistic. Let's face it, you haven't seemed to concerned with the well being of America's fighting men up to this point. It looks suspiciously like you only care about them long enough to give a quick kick to the guts of the US Military as a whole. If you wouldnt swing between caling them killers or entire innocent families and being concerned if they are getitng clean drinking water or not we may be less likely to see through your bullshit.

It amazes me that you cannot see a separation between accusations of a select few soldiers versus the military as a whole being attackers of innocents in a few, specific situations. Then you claim his concern about the water situation is ill-conceived because he has distaste for a several men who attacked innocents, but why is that so? Can he not care about the well-being of the soldiers? After all, he helps pay for all this.

have you been reading the same guerilla posts as I have for the past year? he is anti military, anti american all the way, he has no concern for our miltary men at all. come on.

That may be so, and probably due to a focus on the negative, but if there was no concern at all; why would he bother posting articles about contamination of the water supply for our armed forces and complain about that? If he did it for political mudslinging there are other issues that are detached from military connections he could choose from, and if he so loathed them why would he bother trying to drum up sympathetic sentiment?

because the only thing better then attacking the troops on the ground in Iraq with outright lies and accusations of murder is attacking the military as a whole for not caring about them. you got to remember the guy who posted this is a scumbag cheap shot artist who likes to kick people in the guts while they are down

If you actually think the military (or the government for that matter) cares about the troops you got another thing coming. There a long history of trying out expirmental drugs on soldiers. My friends dad got a letter 6 yearts ago telling him they sprayed his boat with a biological agent in vietnam. Gulf war syndrome "doesn't exist." The military didn't have enough body armor and are now refusing to let soldiers wear their own (even the better vests.) WW1 veterans camping out at the capital waiting to recieve back pay, with their families, were violently attacked and arrested. The VA's budget has been repeatedly slashed. DU is supossedly safe even though there been no testing.

I'll let an old abolistionist newspaper state my view:

"Every lover of Freedom and humanity, throughout the world, must wish them [the Mexicans] the most triumphant success.. .. We only hope that, if blood has had to flow, that it has been that of the Americans, and that the next news we shall hear will be that General Scott and his army are in the hands of the Mexicans. . . , We wish him and his troops no bodily harm, but the most utter defeat and disgrace."

It's sort of a "I hope you learned your lesson" kind of feeling y'know?
and if he so loathed them why would he bother trying to drum up sympathetic sentiment? And funny that I am the one who almost always starts the thread about how our troops are getting fucked by the government/corporations. You would think some of you uber-patriots would post them from time to time since you claim to love them so much...

anti american all the way, You call me anti-american because you are nothing but a nationalist/racist. Because I believe that any innocents being murdered is wrong while you revel in the deaths of non-americans. I love America the country. I like most of the people in it (unlike you who repeatedly says "If you don't like our policies get the fuck out" how anti-american is that?...) What I don't like is the government and mass murder.
Guerilla, its just that your sudden concern for the troops seems a little opportunistic. Let's face it, you haven't seemed to concerned with the well being of America's fighting men up to this point.yet again you try to pretend that I have not repeatedly posted stories about how our troops get shafted. good job. Also you are extremely short sighted if you think this only affects the troops. This poison will find its way into American families living on and off base.
you got to remember the guy who posted this is a scumbag cheap shot artist who likes to kick people in the guts while they are downLooked in a mirror recently?

And still no one has posted anything remotely on topic. I guess you guys love the government more then the people serving it...

And still no one has posted anything remotely on topic. I guess you guys love the government more then the people serving it... You often post articles such as this, that document some sort of abuse by the military or government. The headline and topic of this one was: Pentagon block on move for safer water, which is a good summation as well. What would you like us to say that is "on topic"? "Pentagon keeping contaminated water from being cleaned? That's bad!"
There's not much to discuss.

Perhaps a little outrage by the uber-patriots at the gross abuse of Americans. At least on par with the bullshit they just gave me for merely posting an article (rather then intentionally poisoning Americans)

They aren't allowed to get outraged at anything an ultra-commie posts. Only great thinkers like Rush Limbaugh.
