Man Busted With Billion-Dollar Bills In US

Reuters

The counterfeit money looked good, but there was one flaw: there is no such thing as a billion-dollar bill.

US Customs agents in California say they found 250 bogus billion-dollar bills while investigating a man charged with currency smuggling.

Tekle Zigetta, 45, pleaded guilty to three federal counts of trying to bring cash, fake bills and a fake $100,000 gold certificate into the United States in January.

Further investigation led agents to a West Hollywood apartment where they found the stash of yellowing and wrinkled one billion-dollar bills with an issue date of 1934 and bearing a picture of President Grover Cleveland.

"You would think the $1 billion denomination would be a giveaway that these notes are fake, but some people are still taken in," James Todak said, a secret services agent involved in the probe.

LOL, remember those kids a few years ago who bought stuff with Monopoly money?
They actually passed off a few of those bills.

About 20 years ago, some superb bills were passed off in New York. The Treasury agents were amazesd at the intricticies of the bills--they were real works of art. Only a very sharp eye could tell the bills weren't genuine.

The thing is, they were only in one and five dollar demominations. The agents wondered why a counterfeit artist like that would not attempt to hang bigger paper.

They finally tracked the counterfeiter to a small walk- up in the city. He was an elderly man living alone with a dog--and a printing press, which he had made himself. You can imagine how long it took to build that thing---the agents questioned the old man and asked why he didn't print bigger bills. The old man said he only printed what he needed , to buy food and to buy items for his dog.

The judge took pity on the old guy and sentenced him to minimal time.

The old guy used to work at the US Treasury--in the engraving department.
