"A first-ever poll of US troops deployed in a war that was conducted by Zogby International (ZI) contained some startling results. 72% of US troops serving in Iraq said the US should leave Iraq within the next year, including 29% who said the US should leave immediately. More surprising were troops responses as to why the US was in Iraq, with 85% saying that the US mission is mainly "to retaliate for Saddam's role in the 9/11 attacks." "93% said that removing weapons of mass destruction is not a reason for US troops being there," said ZI President John Zogby. "Instead, that initial rationale went by the wayside and, in the minds of 68% of the troops, the real mission became to remove Saddam Hussein." Paul Rieckhoff, president of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, urged the public to listen to the troops' concerns. "The conversation has been dominated for far too long by people who have little or no credibility on the issue. The Troops want a timeline and a change in course. Americans should want to know why."

It would be very useful it you could show us the question and possible answers to the poll that shows such 'discontent'.
Let me help you.
"How long should U.S. troops stay in Iraq?"
But the first three answers are not phrased in terms of staying, they are phrased "withdraw...," "withdraw..." and "withdraw... ." Where are the options for troops who think the United States should stay for "one to two years" or "two to five years"? Zogby omits such nuance. It's stay or go. Now or never.
http://www.democracy-project.com/archives/002390.htmlHugh Hewitt, whose lawyerly analyses and interview skills are tops, had his producer phone John Zogby for an on air interview.
Zogby hung up on the producer. So much for building trust in Zogby's methods!

One has to wonder how people get this kind of information, as it runs directly opposite to everything I've heard about what the U.S. soldiers had been saying about their role in Iraq.
If you have access to the New York Post, (it's free btw) go and read the articles by Ralph Peters, he spent weeks with soldiers in Iraq and he didn't pick up any of the ideas posted by Zogby, dammit.

The survey included 944 military respondents interviewed at several undisclosed locations throughout Iraq. The names of the specific locations and specific personnel who conducted the survey are being withheld for security purposes. Surveys were conducted face-to-face using random sampling techniques. The margin of error for the survey, conducted Jan. 18 through Feb. 14, 2006, is +/- 3.3 percentage points.

What difference does the poll make - Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld are not going to withdraw the troops no matter what a poll has as results. They THINK the troops are making a difference and as long as they think they are making a difference they will keep the troops there.
