A pretty good race to start off the season, even if all the mist and fog made it hard to see the cars!
Good to see Junior back on track, and as for "elder statesman", "mellowed out" Tony Stewart, he's back to his bad -boy ways, wrecking people and sending them spinning into the grass for bothering him.
He MUST be a relative!
Go Tony go.

Interestingly, Tony Stewart and Matt Kenseth are both scheduled to race at Madison International Speedway in June. It will be interesting to see what develops between those two away from the watchful eyes of NASCAR.

He even has a tire from one of Mark Martin's cars. For his last birthday he got one of those fantasy NASCAR gifts from my daughter. Montoya is returning to NASCAR because he couldn't cut it in Formula One. He has sucked for two years now and he is the one who caused the pileup at the Brickyard when he ran into his own teamate and knocked both cars out of the race. It was either race in NASCAR or not race at all next year.

just heard the laughable news that IRL "star" Danica Patrick is searching for a ride in NASCAR next year.
Her contract with Rahal-Letterman will expire this year and it's doubtful it's renewed as this is a "race car driver" who always ends up exactly where she qualifies...she does not pass or race anyone.
I have disliked this woman from the moment she showed up at the Brickyard a few years ago and declared in a snit..."I wanted the pole"..
Well, you dolt, they don't give you the pole, you have to earn it, you idiot.
Now she'll say..."I want a ride with Hendrick or Roush! I want Junior's car!!""

It'd be nice if more NASCAR or IRL tracks had more twists and turns, but then again, this would make it harder for the fans to watch and also harder for the race to be televised.
An oval track is easier for fans and tv cameras to keep track of all that's going on, and, at Bristol, all the seats have a view of the entire track.
Which is why tickets are harder to get for this track than any place else!
NASCAR, like all sports governing bodies, is out for the all mighty dollar first and foremost--television revenue.

It would be nice if NASCAR joined the 21st century. Pushrod V-8s featuring carburetors, with or without the dastardly choking plates, is old time stuff. The same goes for the rest of the drivetrain & suspension. When did that happen? I used to watch NASCAR a little when I was a kid and back then they were all driving cars that actually came off the assembly line at one point. Then I lost interest. When NASCAR reappared on my radar screen suddenly they were plastic cars with no semblance to anything you could actually purchase.

I'm not sure when it actually took place. I too lost sight of NASCAR for many years.
Microprocessors happened. Fuel injection became a reality. The mandated 55 mph speed limit and demands for increased fuel efficiency happened. The big V8's were replaced by V6's and even 4's. What was coming from the Big 3 & hitting the sales floor was no longer suitable for racing.
I'm shooting from the hip here, but that's MHO.

The 55 mph speed limit was imposed on a national level during the Carter administration in response to the (then) fuel crisis. It was a joke then, but made some communities a ton of money as their kops took full advantage of it. Thankfully, it's history.

Words of Wisdom from Ricky Bobby, star of the new NASCAR movie, Talladega Nights
Ricky Bobby on NASCAR being a sport: "When you're going 210 miles per hour into a turn at Talladega, and you're fighting off two cars, and you've got your wife in your headset telling you she wants a Lexus to keep her shoes in, then you tell me who is an athlete and who isn't. NASCAR is a sport and then some. No one gave Neil Armstrong crap about whether landing on the moon was a sport or not. They just basked in his awesomeness. So bask in my awesomeness. Do it. Bask. Right now."
On his earliest childhood memory: "My earliest memory is of a guy in a gorilla mask and no shirt being arrested on our front lawn. It was my dad. He had sold the sheriff's son a $200 block of oregano at a Leif Garrett concert. My dad tried to hide from the cops by putting on the gorilla mask and claiming he was a singing-telegram guy. He was kind of a rascal. Or, as the police called him, a repeat offender."
Carley Bobby on her clothing style: "I make a lot of my own clothes. I have my own label, Just Carley. I'm heavily influenced by the work of Jaclyn Smith and Christina Aguilera. Those are two ladies with undeniable style. But every Tuesday is Stevie Nicks Day. I feather my hair and wear flowing robes, and I spin a lot. It's really invigorating."

It was a gorgeous spectacle today at the Brickyard 400---the crowds, the great weather, the camarderie of the fans, the food, the souvineers, getting to meet and greet some of our favorite drivers.
Unfortunately, I'm not too happy with how the race itself turned out---my fantasy team was doing just fine and I was well on my way to setting a new personal record for points total, when, with one half lap to go, an accident occured between Kasey Kahne and Denny Hamlin--2 of my drivers. Kasey hit the wall hard and was almost airborne--thankfully he's ok. Jimmie Johnson, not exactly a crowd favorite, won, and 4 time winner Jeff Gordon overcame an early 2 lap deficit to finish 16th.
All in all a fun day but I expect to drop in the standings. Oh well---at least I'm still beating Bubba.

Free Tickets for NASCAR Fans!!!
That is, if you're from Pluto.....
Fron nascar.com:
A day after the planet Pluto was disowned by the world's astronomers, Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage is embracing the former baby in the solar system's nine-planet pantheon.
In honor of the planet formerly known as Pluto, Texas Motor Speedway will give residents of Pluto a free ticket to the Dickies 500. The ticket would be for the 2015 or 2016 Dickies 500 since it is a three billion-mile trip that takes roughly 9½ years in the New Horizons spacecraft. Pluto race fans must show a photo ID with a proof of residence at the TMS ticket office to be eligible for a Dickies 500 ticket.
"This is such a Mickey Mouse move by the astronomers, especially since my second-grade teacher told me it was a planet back then and still should be," Gossage said. "They may disregard Pluto, but Texas Motor Speedway won't. We already have all 50 states and several foreign countries with season tickets, but we'd love to be the first speedway to get a season ticket-holder from Pluto. We are always looking to expand our market."

Tony Stewart Doesn't Make Chase
What a shock. It just won't be the same without Smoke, the defending champion and one of the better, more exciting drivers in Nextel Cup.
Smoke, tho he has a bad boy reputation, does lots of volunteer work for poor kids and has never forgotten where he's come from. He can be gracious when he wants to be---after the race Saturday at Richmond that eliminated him, he emerged smiling from his number 20 Home Depot car and congratulated the ten drivers who HAD made it in, and wished them could luck.
The pit road announcer asked if his chances were doomed from the start of the race, because he'd wrecked his primary car at practice and had to drive a backup car for the race, that just would not handle.
Tony said no, that he'd had 25 previous chances (races) to get in the Chase .
The Chase is on. Ten races to go!!!!!
Here are the ten drivers vying for the championship:
Matt Kenseth Leader
2. -- Jimmie Johnson -5
3. -- Kevin Harvick -10
4. +1 Kyle Busch -15
5. +2 Denny Hamlin -20
6. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. -25
7. +2 Mark Martin -30
8. +2 Jeff Burton -35
9. -5 Jeff Gordon -40
10. +1 Kasey Kahne
My money is on either Jr or Kasey Kahne, who's on a real roll and has won 5 races this year and drove his heart out Saturday to get in this thing.--Denny has an outside chance. It's exciting to have a talented rookie in this thing.....Mark M is the sentimental favorite.

Do they start the 10 drivers at zero points for the chase or do they retain the points they've earned up to that point?

Here's how they do it--
Kenseth will start at zero, with J Johnson five points behind, and so on ( see chart). Kahne appears the real underdog at -45.
It might seem that the top 2 or so have a real lock but Jimmie had the lead the last two times going in and did not win.

Kyle Busch, the ninny, had a horrendous race today at Loudon, heheh, and has all but eliminated his sorry self from the Chase. At least SOMETHING went right in my sports universe today....Jimmie Johnson, who can't seem to get it going when it really counts, also did badly. There was some three wide and trading paint kind of racing today--just what the fans want to see!
Denny the rookie is now second in points total, Mark M and Kasey K also had decent showings; Harvick leads.
The Chase is truly up for grabs now--coming up Sunday, the Monster Mile at Dover.

Wild race at Dover's Monster Mile today--just what we expect from these playoffs too--blown engines, accidents, running out of gas, and Jeff Burton's first victory in I don't know how long.
Here's the standings after today:
+4 Jeff Burton Leader
2. +2 Jeff Gordon -6
3. -- Matt Kenseth -18
4. -2 Denny Hamlin -18
5. -4 Kevin Harvick -54
6. -- Mark Martin -75
7. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. -102
8. +1 Jimmie Johnson -136
9. -1 Kasey Kahne -182
10. -- Kyle Busch -224
Kyle's chances took another big hit today , as did Kasey's because of an accident with Tony during the 11th lap.
Scuttlebutt has it that Juan Montoya will drive his first NASCAR race next week at Kansas. I'm not so sure this is a good idea--the guys are going all out and they will give him no quarter.

I really don't have any favorites in NASCAR. I don't particularly care for the home despot sponsored Stewart.

There's many hereabouts who dislike the native son too. I guess he's the kind of guy you either love or hate.
Many here prefer the bland, politically correct, dull Jeff Gordon, "Wonder Boy".
It's no fun unless you have a favorite driver/s, and those you heartily dislike too.

Denny Hamlin would get my fav. vote, primarily because his major sponsor pays our bills as well. I used to follow NASCAR more closely, not so much any more.

I like Denny. It's hard to believe he's a rookie, he's so talented. And he seems like a decent, down-home kind of young guy too...it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't win this whole thing, he's that good, and there's no pressure on him--he says he's having fun and enjoying the Chase.

You must be the hardware guy at Lowe's. I've always preferred Lowe's, personally. Either that or you work at an independent store.

I love the Chase--each and every race is more wild, bizarre, accident-filled, and outrageous than the last...today, at Kansas, Tony won by coasting across the finish line with no gas...driver after driver was spluttering out there, trying desperately to get all four wheels across the finish line with their gas tanks empty--this after multiple spinouts, 5 wide racing, and drivers hitting the wall in turn 4, including Denny, who pulled off a miracle finish and is now a very close second in points total:
. -- Jeff Burton Leader
2. +2 Denny Hamlin -69
3. +3 Mark Martin -70
4. -1 Matt Kenseth -84
5. -- Kevin Harvick -96
6. -4 Jeff Gordon -120
7. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. -123
8. -- Jimmie Johnson -165
9. +1 Kyle Busch -233
10. -1 Kasey Kahne -273
Next week--Talladega!!!!!
Let the REAl accidents begin............ one wrong move by anyone and it takes out 20 cars.

Suckful Way to End a Race
Jr was leading with one half lap to go at Talladega today, with Hendrick temmates Brian Vickers and Jimmie J right behind.
Jr probably would have been passed as the 2 drafted each other to go on by, but Vickers, who has never won a Nextel cup event, decided to end his 107 race winless streak by hitting Jimmie, who then hit Jr, who both then spun into the grass.
The boos were deafening.
It's highly doubtful that Vickers gets a ride from anyone next season and was told earlier this year by Hendrick that there wasn't a ride for him there anymore.
Standings after today with 6 races to go, and next race a night one at Lowe's at Charlotte:
. -- Jeff Burton Leader
2. +2 Matt Kenseth -6
3. -- Mark Martin -10
4. +1 Kevin Harvick -33
5. -3 Denny Hamlin -51
6. +1 Dale Earnhardt Jr. -106
7. -1 Jeff Gordon -147
8. -- Jimmie Johnson -156
9. +1 Kasey Kahne -185
10. -1 Kyle Busch -185

Jeffy eliminated from Championship contention today---he is too far out after today's race to win, tho he had a great showing in the race at Phoenix.
Jimmie Johnson, Mr Politically -correct Perfection, will have to finish no worse than 12th to wrap it up next week at Homestead for the Ford 400.
There might be a few drivers who have something to say about that---like Tony, who wrecked Jamie Macmurray today for not going fast enough, and who flips off Jimmie every chance he gets and would be more than delighted to knock him out of contention.
Bless his sweet Hoosier heart, that's just the kind of sweetie-pie Tony is and why we love him so.
