Sheikh Tantawi called on clerics and scholars from all the world over to join forces and press for the enactment of an international law criminalizing blasphemy.

"We want an abiding international law criminalizing insults to religions, prophets and sanctities," he said after the meeting with the Danish delegation.

Sheikh Tantawi said religious leaders "do have the power" to press for such a law "if supported by the media."

"The current standoff will only come to an end if this law sees the light," he said.

What is this 'blasphemy'? How do you define blasphemy? Especially across all religious spectrums. Who does this judgment, and how would punishment be dealt?

The cartoons are spreading, and still there are protests in places such as Idonesia, where the American Embassy was subject of a riot, and Christian churches in the area faced opposition. Yet, in a Polish music magazine recently, Madonna's face was transposed on the face of the Virgin Mary-there was no violent marching and outcry. We can't universalize blasphemy, it even has trouble in single faiths (ex: Blaspheme by wearing shorts into the Vatican, while an American church may hold a service/mass and not care what the congregation wears). I should hope this measure doesn't get passed by any nation.

Tantawi claims "the standoff" won't end until a censorship law is passed (in favor of religions). The standoff will have to end another way, if they want to restrict basic human rights, this confrontation will persist for ages to come.

Don't worry about defining blasphemy the Muslims will define it as needed.

Actually in 7 european countries it is illegal to quesiotn the holocaust. A Jewish blasphemy, if you will. Yet somehow none of the news networks covering this issue ever seem to mention it. There is no free speech in the EU. "hate speech" is considered illegal. Yet for some reason no one in Europe has seen fit to label this thing "hate spech." But I'm sure thats exactly what they consider it in the ME. A mostly White-Judeo-Christian country fails to see why theres all the outcry. But feel free to readily jail those who question historical events.

The denial of the holocaust is a part of Islamic obsession with killing of the Jews and they must never allow the Jews to be protrayed as the victim or Islam as a racist terrorist religion. Islam likes to show a false reality today and yesterday and based on what will help them in their Jihad by sword and by pen.

Hate speech is when you inspire people to riot and murder. The commander is just as guilty as the pawns. This law needs to be used after the cartoon affair.

In Israel Muslims have legal right to their religion. This freedom of religion does not exist in racist Islamic countries.

Wrong turn by soldiers led to brutal killings

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) -- It started with a wrong turn,

Israeli defense officials said two -- perhaps three -- reserve soldiers were on their way to a call-up at a West Bank base near the Palestinian controlled West Bank town of Ramallah, just north of Jerusalem. They were in a car with Israeli plates.

The soldiers took a wrong turn into Palestinian territory, the army said. West Bank roads are not clearly marked, and such wrong turns are not unusual. In June, four Israeli buses headed for a settlement turned into Kalandiya refugee camp and were torched.

Army officials said the men were not stopped when they unwittingly passed through a Palestinian roadblock. The roadblock is frequently unmanned.

At least one of the men -- who remain unidentified pending notification of their families -- was in civilian clothes, and one other was in uniform. Reservists usually receive their uniforms only once they register at their base.

The army said a crowd of Palestinians identified them as Israelis and chased them. The car made a U-turn, and headed for a Palestinian police station they had just passed, near Manara Square in central Ramallah.

The Israelis ran inside the police station, seeking shelter. Police said they were contacting Israelis to come pick up the men the mob attacked.

Word got out that the Palestinian police were holding several Israeli soldiers. Hundreds of Palestinians -- as many as 1,500 -- surrounded the police station and called for the execution of the Israelis. Police ordered the crowd away, but about a dozen men climbed in through a window.

TV footage showed one of the attackers run to the second-floor window and make a victory sign, and then return to the fray. In the background, several men were seen pounding on something or someone lying on the floor. The crowd erupted into cheers.

The attackers tossed one of the men out of the window, another out the door. The mob -- some with bloodied hands -- surrounded the men, some stabbing at them with the broken bars of a window grille. One of the men was dragged out of the police compound and through the streets, witnesses said.

The army eventually received two bodies. Army officials said the two Israelis had been badly mutilated. Initial examinations showed contusions from kicks and beatings with a metal bar. One of the bodies was beaten beyond recognition, they said.
