Wow a Senatorial Candidate telling it like it is...Theres no way in hell he'll get elected...
+++++++++++++

"I said it. I meant it. I stand behind it," he said.

Hackett said in a Sunday column in The Columbus Dispatch: "The Republican Party has been hijacked by the religious fanatics that, in my opinion, aren't a whole lot different than Osama bin Laden and a lot of the other religious nuts around the world."

Hackett, an Iraq war veteran from the Cincinnati suburb of Indian Hill, is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate against Rep. Sherrod Brown. They are vying to run against two-term Republican Sen. Mike DeWine.

Hackett also said the practice of denying gays equal rights is un-American. The newspaper asked Hackett if that meant the 62 percent of Ohioans who voted to ban gay marriage were un-American.

"If what they believe is that we're going to have a scale on judging which Americans have equal rights, yeah, that's un-American," Hackett said.

I think he, and you, have two things mixed up. There is a difference between "denying gays rights" and "banning gay marriage". The thing is... you can ban gay marriage but still give them all the rights that go with it. I dont get why they cant just except a civil union. Alot of people hold the word "marriage" with high reguard... why are gay people so wanting piss other people off.

Only in the way that denying rights is a bigger umbrella term, while banning marriage still falls under it.

Why can't they accept a civil union? Because the use of different labels shows a form of discrimination under the law. White water fountains and black water fountains way back when functioned the same, but were still regarded, and intended, for specific groups. Either the government eliminates the use of the term "marriage"(in favor of a civil union under federal law, while marriage can be achieved by religious or social bindings of the spouses), and make it a civil union for all, or they don't guard the term 'marriage'.

Also, being recognized equally under the law, and "pissing other people off", may sometimes cross paths. I doubt George the III enjoyed hearing about tea shipments being thrown overboard in his American territories.

That doesn't mean you aren't denying gays rights when you ban them from marrying.

In theory you could, but it probably wouldn't work very well, and you'd be arbitrarily applying the law so as not to offend a few thick-headed citizens. Usually the same thick-headed citizens who complain the loudest about not having the right to not be offended.

I dont get why they cant just except a civil union.

Would you? Why don't we call your relationship a civil union, and gays can get married...after all, it's just a word.

Alot of people hold the word "marriage" with high reguard...

Which of course is why you can't let gays soil the word by using it...right Decka?

why are gay people so wanting piss other people off.

Because we are denied our rights unjustly. I think that's a good reason to take a chance at pissing off a few people.

How about leave Marriage as the religious connotation, a church and a reverend and all that; and have civil union be the official, governmentally recognized name. It's kinda like an SAT question, all marriages are civil unions but not all civil unions are marriages. The government gives gays equal rights, leave it to the church to do whatever it wants. After all, the government is in no control of the church.

Just my 3 cents.

It is a good idea, and has been suggested by many on these boards and elsewhere. Those who want a marriage do so via their religious temple/community, or do so by their own whim in their social circles.

Such a system would never be able to be implemented across the whole of America, perhaps a few states, but not the nation as a whole. Not for a great deal of time.

What he said was true.........but it is political suicide to tell the truth in America.

Giving the religionist/superstitionist faction the truth affects them like Kryptonite affects Superman.

Anyone pointing out (as John McCain learned to his dismay in the 200 presidential race) the simple-mindedness of the teeming masses selecting their prefered candidate based on how closely said candidate conforms to the tenets of Xtianity is certain to face the wrath of the superstitionists (who unfortunately make up the overwhelming majority) at the polling booth.

if a iraq veteran said it it must be true, as long as that iraq veteran agrees with guerilla that is. If he doesnt, he is a haji killing racist who probably hates gays.

do us a favor A-hole, stop kissing the ass of vets who agree with you and accusing all the rest of being racists, it makes you look like a fucking retard
