View Full Version : Who are you ?

A few month ago, the original "who are you" thread was lost. Here is a new one for all this forum members, old or new, who want people to know better who they are.
Rather than answering a list of questions, I suggest every one just writes a few lines, possibly mentioning (or not) :
- your name, age, sex, place, occupation, hobbies, family, political views, tastes (books, movies, music, games, food, people), phobias, abilities, goals, achievments, motivations to contribute to this forum, etc...
I'll start :
My first name is Paul. This is my picture (5 years ago, OK) on my avatar. I am living in Lille, in northern France, just next to Belgium - it's a big post-industrial city with lots of social problems but also very nice people from many countries around the world. I was born in France 37 years ago.
I have two daughters, who are the cutest little girls this side of the Atlantic. I work as a journalist and writer for kids and some of my books have been translated in the USA, without success I'm afraid. I work two days a week in Paris, just next to the Champs-Elysées, and at home the rest of the time.
I like playing boardgames and computergames, and discussing politics and other issues with you people from all over the world. I am what american people would call "a liberal" (which means the opposite in french !) and most of all a greenish and human-rights activist (which means : sometimes going to demonstrations, and very often staying with the kids while my Beloved is attending meetings - she's the real activist of the couple).
I started contributing to this forum just 1 year after 9-11, because I wanted to understand how american people felt after this tragedy. It has now becomen something between a drug and a bad habit.

First name is Rudy.
I'm 62, going to be 63 this February.
I'm a retired educator (ran the elementary science program for a large, suburban school district for many years).
My wife and I spend part of the year on Long Island in New York and part on the beach in Pompano Beach, Florida. That's on the east coast just above Ft. Lauderdale.
We have four grown children, three sons and a daughter and six grandkids with number seven on the way.
I tend to be politically on the conservative side with a strong liberal social bent. I usually describe myself as a Nozickian Liberal but if you haven't read Robert Nozick that probably means nothing to you.
I like to hunt, fish, walk, play golf and read. Most of my reading is either mysteries or straight history with an emphasis on medieval history.
I would post a picture but a theif broke into my SUV on the way down to Florida and stole both digital still cameras and the digital camcorder along with over $15,000 worth of other stuff.

Hello Astra, 3, and Frogger,
It's nice to meet you. My name is Rendova. I'm married, age 43, have 5 kids, 2 daughters in college, oldest son has been accepted at Annapolis, 2 middle-schoolers. I work in education, and part-time as a genealogist. I enjoy reading history, mostly American, gardening, working with kids. My husband and I are Civil War re-enactors and this is almost a full-time hobby. I have a life-long interest in crime and criminal behavior, and work as a volunteer advocate for families of victims of violent crime.
I'm a Hoosier, but lived in Texas a few years. We're a sports family; I've been following the Cleveland Browns and Chicago White Sox for more years than I care to remember. I can now go to my grave a happy person as the Sox FINALLY won the Series!!!
I have little interest in politics but suppose I'd describe myself as Libertarian, somewhat conservative. I ran across this site by accident and enjoy the interesting give and take.
hoosier! last time i heard that was when i was in indiana. ..

I'm Vince, 22 years old, single college dropout. I served in the US Air Force for a year and eight months, got out on a general discharge. (Up yours USAF!) I like to cook, practice movement schools like dancing and martial arts, listen to and learn to play music, listen to and learn foreign languages, (I have intermediate Japanese knowledge) and think about and discuss the political, philosophical and religious topics that I feel are important and relevant to living life.
Currently I am unemployed. As for goals, well when I am speaking philisophically, I don't have any goals, and my life's aspiration is to be a wandering bum. When I am speaking about my real life, many people would be very surprised to find out just how ambitious and enterprising I can be. It is an interesting dichotomy that I enjoy playing with.
I enjoy posting on AllForums because I like to flex my intellectual muscles and prove how much smarter I am than all of you. :p Actually I like posting here because I love to interact with people in many different and stimulating ways, and have fun mixing social dynamics in ways that I hope others find neat and cool. Being an insufferable egoist, I hope all of you will find me fresh, smart, funny, cool, relevant, and just all around awesome, because I like to spend time crafting my posts in such ways. I also hope that I can bring at least some of my unique perspective into your daily lives so you can have a little more fun, sing a little bit louder, and dance a little more freely.
I think that's it, for now. Red, you are absolutely gorgeous, just thought I'd let you know.

Hello, I'm Jones (formerly known as Grace) and I am 14 years old. I go to a pretty accepted high school where I am openly gay in Georgia. My hobbies include poking people, reading, gay rights, good feminist punk music, alcohol, and being brutally honest. As far as politics go I'm a Greenie. I'll probably(hopefully) go to the University of Georgia. I hope to one day be a journalist.
I'm so boring...

I also am an animal lover who enjoys hunting.
Where in the Adirondacks? I used to own seventeen acres in Pine Lake in Fulton County. It was right in the park on the north south hunting line. Had a nice trout stream, a small swamp, a three or four acre meadow and the rest forest. When I was younger I used to tent on the property for weeks at a time. My wife hated the place and the kids all eventually grew up and married so I sold the place and used the money I made as a downpayment on my condo in Florida.

Well I am Dio (not real name). I was officially done with education last fall and now happily work as a software developer and live in an apartment all by myself for the first time in my life. I was born and raised in Taipei, moved to Florida at 15, and now I am in Atlanta. I probably fit the description of a metrosexual, but I don't like the femininity people usually associate that term with, and I HATE yuppies. I simply approach such things as health/beauty, fine dining/cooking, film criticism, games, fashion, and entertainment/debauchery in general with the same level of academic zeal as I would mathematics, literature, history, money matters, or philosophy/religion--usually gaining great rewards mentally and physically from doing so. I used to be quick to criticise, but I've grown more inquisitive as I get older--asking people questions is fun and intellectually satisfying. I am more interested in understanding how humans think than searching for universal truths. My political/religious views are self-centric--in any issue, I tend to support the one which results in the increase in my personal happiness (assuming, of course, that I can only be happy if I see myself as being moral most of the time)--although generally I come across as a pretty objective person. I have been with my girlfriend since 18. We have no children and plan never to.

Pardon the segue....
Hello all -
My name is Justin and I live right outside of Chicago, IL. I work for a family owned business which manufactures recognition products for schools all over the US and Canada. We're a mail order business that sends out upwards of 300,000 catalogues at the start of each year. On top of being a retailer, we're also a manufacturer. We employ anywhere from 30 to 50 people, and I manage half of them. I just recently enjoyed my 29th birthday, in which, I came to the terribly depressing realization that I have less than a year to call myself "young"...
Hobbies: I like to scratch-build model R/C aircraft, and I'm an avid gun collector. I love movies, and I like to debate.
Politics: I'm slightly right of Barry Goldwater. My favorite president was Ronald Reagan, and I'm a card-carrying member of the NRA. In other words, I'm the anti-Christ of Allforums (and pretty much, anywhere else on the Internet as well).
Lifelong goal: to become a billionaire.

Wow talk about a small world, I live in fulton county now. There are hundreds of fishing places around here, of course the trout are awesome. I built 3 ponds and stocked 1 of them with trout the others have bass sun fish and cats. The only thing I can think of besides NY taxes that I don't like is the blackfly season. I have a feeling it's going to be bad dealing with them this spring. We've also had problems with the coyotes they seem to be growing in #'s.

May I ask why? What, were you abused as a child
Because I think I should only have children if the state of having children is what I want in life. And it has never been. I don't think like this: "having children is something people usually do in life, but I don't want them because..." I don't see it as a duty to become parent. So if it doesn't seem like I'll enjoy being one, I don't want to become one.
Of course if you are a parent already, it is your duty to be a good parent. Check out my thread in Philosophy/Religion "To Have Or To Have Not" for more discussions on why people want to have kids. :)
Ahh...but I haven't answered the original question. No, I was not abused as child.

Hello everybody. My name is Alex and I live in Cleveland, OH. I am 19 years old, going to a community college for now, and I plan on transferring to CSU in a year or so. I also work part time at a restaurant. I enjoy playing basketball and tennis. I suppose I joined AllForums just because I want to keep up with news and people's opinions. Of course I like to argue, and people like to provoke me. (My signature may start some hot conversations) I don't think I want to go into any details about my political beliefs as many people think they are radical. I am a religious person, or I grew up in a religious family...
I don't know what I want to do later in life, I play the cards I'm dealt. Sure, life can be a bitch sometimes, but I try to make the most of it. I think that's about it about me.

But I strongly disagree with the idea that any belief should be tolerated. IMO nazism is far away from the red line. I would support banning Bit/byte unless he changes his signature.

So is the genocide of millions for their ethnicity, religion, lifestyle, or other "defect". Is it absolutely necessary to post a picture in your signature that has a good chance to offend many people?

Borg, thanks for quoting Voltaire !
My problem is not what Bit says. It's the picture in his signature. Whether he posts something in movies, humor or chat central, we'll have to stand this nazi propaganda. What are we supposed to do then ?
1- Nothing. Then the picture of Hitler and swastikas may appear on many pages in Allforums without anyone showing concern. I don't like this idea.
2- Replying every time by stating we don't agree with him ? And then turn every thread into a debate about nazims and freedom of speech ? Making him a victim and giving him every opportnity to defend nazims as " an acceptable opinion" ? I don't want this to happen either.
I think that's why Bit should change his sig. Otherwise we just fall into his trap.
Don't be fooled : this is not an issue of freedom of speech. I have nothing against him starting a thread about how Hitler was great. What I don't want is to see him turn Allforums into a propaganda tool against the will of other users and moderators.

Actually this signature issue is not about Freedom of Speech. It's completely up to the Forum's owner or the concensus of the Admins what is and is not acceptable. It should be (but not necessarily is) their responsibility to make the guideline known. If illegal images are permitted and the posting of which results in legal issues, the responsible party should be decided by whether guidelines explicitly forbid the offending image.
The US might be a democracy, but forums, websites, corporations, clubs, and any membership-based organizations, do not necessarily have to be.
Napsterbater
02-08-2006, 04:32 PM
It is a freedom of speech issue. If people are for free expression, that means allowing it onto their own private forums they set up for the public to access. You cannot hide behind, "But it's my own, private forum!" squelch free speech on your private forum, and expect to be taken seriously when you say you love America's freedoms. Put up or shut up. Either you are for free expression or you are not for it.
That does not mean you cannot set up rules. Free expression is not anarchy. But anything inside of the rules should not be censored. The rules should be clear, and allow for as little personal interpretation as possible.
Go and try to find a truly public forum. They do not exist. Everything is owned by somebody, and even public land is very often has undue restrictions on allowable speech activities.

This is basically what I am saying. My point is, if I don't like the rules of this forum, I'll complain or quit coming. It is simply not the owner's responsibility to hold votes or please the majority. If the rules are rediculous and the site loses all members, it's the owner's problem. Complaints filed toward the admin need not mention validity of Freedom of Speech, all that's necessary is "I don't like this, what do you think we modify the rule to restrict such and such?" No rhetoric. (ah, Nap I know you hate the 'no rhetoric' part, you rhetorician)

Currently working out (following a structured 3 days on 4 days off) muscle building routine, 6 meals a day, 8 glasses of water, 3000 calories :) its all good fun. My aim is to get a body I'm truly happy with and since I don't accumulate fat I think I'm on path. Also the strength and endurance fitness I'm building up will aid me in my main aim of joining the UK Army within the IT/Opps bracket.
I'm joining to learn self sufficiently, raise my confidence, travel and I think its really such an empowering job role.
I have 2 brothers and 2 sisters (one of which is now a stripper lol) and the greatest dad in the world to whom raised me and my sister single handedly from my age of 4.
I am trying to get a little Internet based business off the ground at the moment with my main aim to give my dad a financially free life and so I can get my own apartment in Osaka, Japan and move there permanently
My religious views are :) Agnostic in basis. I have a serious dislike for all TV preachers and I'll be honest for some reason truly dislike Christianity/Catholicism.
I don't really have much in the way of Political views. I have lost any interest in Britain's ability to handle itself and am revoking my Citizenship when i move to Japan.

I love animals but also am a hunter, I care what is happening to this world especially after having children. I also try to stay out of politics to many hard/hot heads :(. I have learned alot on here from others and enjoy the different views on life even if they're wrong :D. I live in the country, adirondacks moutains of NY very beautifull land with many creatures.
Hi my name is NiNa & I'll be 36 in July. I too am an animal lover & I also have a 15 year old son. YES they "THINK" they know everything. I was talking to my son over the weekend trying to explain some situations to him & he said "mom I'm street smart I got it all under control" You know though, I remember those days when I thought I knew it all.
Anyway, I live in NJ but I was born in Soule, Korea. I'm 1/2 Korean & 1/2 American. I really enjoy the outdoors especialy up in the mountains.
I'm looking to make some new online friends & share some life experiences.

That's what I like about this place. We have a 17 year old farm girl about to enter college and a 35 year old woman from New Jersey. We have young teenagers and people in their sixties, rural people and urban people, liberals and conservatives, gays and straights, even people from Europe. Where but on the internet could such a diverse group get together?

How about the Big House?
Hey, Imp here,38 going on 16. Only child of a tramatized veitnam vet and a momma who had to bartender. One word to describe my childhood would be 'unwanted'. I lived out of my backpack for most of my life, it's easier to travel or get sent to live with someone else that way. I've lived up and down the east coast of america, most the times I had a place to go. I lived in the woods and on the streets for awhile too, loved the woods the most. I don't understand people so well and lack in my ability to communicate properly.
My daddy was physically and mentally abusive, I hated the head fuck games the most. I am partially deaf, I've had the tips of my ears cut off, and have a brown patch on my iris *on one eye* due to a head injury. I find it hard to fit in on the internet although I am growing to like it here at all forums, I seem accepted for the most part. Perhaps I'm delusional, I dunno. *shrugs*
I forget things at times, try as I may to remember. At least now I can blame it on ole age. hehe
I'm happily married to the sweetest man on earth. I am spoiled rotten, my days are mine to do as I please. We are getting ready to move this summer, and I've been quite busy readying for that. We have two sons, the youngest is 6 and needs physical/OT rehab and speech and is progressing nicely. They are both such a blessing to me.
Here's a pic of me, not much really. I just got back from the crew at the cottage and look like a bum.
suffer.

I'm Mackenzie, I'm 17. I like to hang out with my friends, I cherish my alone time too. I like ceramics, writing poetry
and I am trying to learn the guitar.
I'm single now but recovering. I had moved in with my boyfriend last year, against my parents advice (who dis-owned me because of that), only to find out recently he wasn't faithful to me. So I packed up a suitcase and left and here I am, staying at my friends house, avoiding life, and talking to you. :)
I am going to take one day at a time. I want to finish school and get a job and my own apartment.
I want a blue eyed siamese cat, too. :cat:

I love the mix in this place, young people, wanna be young again people, smart people, those who disagree with me so are obviously not smart people, liberals, conservatives, people from all over the U.S. and from a few other countries as well.
See MacKenzie, your parents were right. We parents are always right. If only you kids would listen to us.:smile2:

You sound like my dad.
They may have been right, I shouldn't have fallen in love so early, but I did what I thought was right. They are wrong for dis-owning me.
How can they come to the decision of wanting nothing to do with me anymore because I loved someone they didn't?
I was taught to respect me elders and I will not talk bad about them.
I don't mean any disrespect to you either, frogger; but I think you are wrong if you agree with their actions.

Oh! Thank you so much for saying that, Frogger, you just made my day better. :D
I have been feeling worthless, confused and betrayed; a lot of mixed emotions.
I still do.
Only now I don't feel so alone; or wrong for feeling them.

Mackenzie ........
This post really touched me,,,,i can feel your pain ,,,i too think your parents are wrong for disowning u.....
As a parent or even before i was a parent i always thought a parents job was to guide thier child along the right path but at the same time respecting that thier child was an individual with thier own mind and thier own feelings and thoughts.......
If this ever happened to me id like to think i was able to trust my childs judgement cus after all i installed good values into my children i tought them right from wrong,,, good from bad.....
Also if it ever happened to me i would make sure my child knew that no matter what i loved them and id always be there for them,,,,even if it meant i cried myself to sleep every night ! Id respect my childs life was her /his own and not mine !

You sound like you will be a good mom.
I agree with what you said, that is how I want to raise my children. I don't want to make them choose between me or someone else they love, and I would want to be there for them both and love them both.

Oh yeah, I called my mom and she did talk to me for awhile on the phone today, (I am in a different state then they are now or I would have went to see her), so I feel a little better now. :)

They are wrong for dis-owning me.
That all depends......
Were you a bad student? Were your Iowa test scores "average" or below? Are you still in school? Did you get pregnant? Are you fat? Was your boyfriend a "gangsta"? Do you have stuffed animals on your bed at 17?
You see, there are lots of reasons to disown a child. I, myself, personally, don't think I could disown my kid (if, biologically, it was mine, of course), but at least it wouldn't be for a lack of trying if they were really stupid or screwed up. That being said, my best advice is to listen to mumsy and do what you're told. Remember...........you're only 17; you don’t know anything.

No, by all means, have them, then have a TV film crew handy when they get older, because it's going to be some seriously funny Malcolm-in-the-Middle type shit.
