View Full Version : Lucky Bags
I have all kinds of lucky bags I'd like to .....get rid of ....*L*. However ........there was one really nice bag I came home with .....from Asia one time ........I used the dang thing for almost a year.
Curiosity is a very strong emotion (remember this guys ........and ....use it to your advantage).

One strange New Year’s custom in Japan is the crazy rush to buy “lucky bags” that are sold by major department stores.
People start lining up hours before the store opens and rush into the store as soon as the doors are unlocked.
Shoppers struggle to buy lucky bags at the beginning of the New Year sales in a Tokyo department store January 2, 2006. More than 12,000 people queued to buy lucky bags at the department store. The sale of lucky bags is an annual tradition organised by department stores in Japan, where sealed bags are prepared by stores and sold at a price lower than the value of the items held in the bags. Shoppers buy the bags without knowing their contents. REUTERS/Kimimasa Mayama

"Pig in the poke" mentality.
You never know what you will get.
Red .......I keep a few bags around ......for when I need them.
The order of my bag saving priority is ...........1) Not soiled (all soiled bags get thrown out or recycled, 2) ratio of large, intermediate, small sizes (I like to keep on hand about at least 4 of each), 3) Nice colorful or exotic bags are more important than plain bags (seasonal bags have some preference, such as Christmas and Halloween) 4) recyclable or non-recyclable.

I wonder if they give away stuff people really want or if it's left-over junk.

Who would buy something without knowing what it is?
My penny-punching streak revolts at such nonsense.

My favorite was the tiny magnifying glass!
Remember the Bazooka Joe gum wrappers you could save up and then get toys with?
I got the magnets but REALLY wanted the X-ray glasses.......
I would like to receive one of the celebrity gift bags.
Many people do not know that celebrities receive gift bags to show up at occasions.
A few examples are:
Live Aid-gift bags for celebrities appx. value $12,000.
Global awards- gift bags values at appx. $38,000.
Emmy Awards for a 30 second introduction appx. $150,000.
These gift bags are filled with trips, diamonds, and all types of goodies from advertisers.
Celebrities even are given these bags, valued at thousands of dollars, to distrubute to guests at their birthday parties.
Realize that when you see celebrities showing up at occasions in great numbers it is, for many, only to receive the free gift bags worth thousands of $.

While you do not know what's in the bag, it states clearly that whatever is in the bag is worth more than the money they have to pay. So it must be very desirable for people who manage to make use of even seemingly useless things.
And that's just the worst case. I imagine most of the time the bags contain things that most people will use.

Japan is a culture that relys heavily on gifts. Anything and everything in that bag will either be used personally or given away as a gift.
I imagine the less desirable things change hands quite frequently.
