We libs say let freedom RING! Neocons say that's cause fer...

...ALARM!

Ringalings from dingalings? Imagine, voters, NOT havin' the freedom ta do what I did jest the Odder night:

I had a perty-good-but-not-yet-great linux system on one partition of my computer, but that don't mean I couldn't grab a few new chunkz of code, insert, re-compile, reboot and SAVOR what in only a half hour I wuz able to turn into...

...a fairly unusable mess...

But WHY do THAT, you ask? Two reasons:

1) I had the FREEDOM to tinker with the code.

AND...

2) I had the FREEDOM ta drink a bottle of the GOOD stuff while tinkerin'...

Of curse, that's what freedom meant ta me the ODDER night! TONIGHT it would likely mean sumthin' entirely different:

Maybe, jest maybe I'll adjust the color on my monitor...

I love gentoo linux. I haven't booted up into windows for well over a month now. Anything I need, all I have to do is emerge it. It does all the configuring and compiling for me. Sometimes I have to mess around with the dependencies, but gentoo makes this a relatively painless process when compared to other distros.

And the community is so helpful, too.

Now if only I had the dough to pay for Cedega, then I could make all my windows games work there too!

I really would like a Mac Mini. They are so small and cute, I could buy a little tote for it and bring it and a LCD panel to coffee shops. It fits in with my mobile lifestyle. I used to have a 19" CRT, but it broke, and now im stuck with this 15" Compaq CRT.

I wonder if there are any LCD panels out there built for portability? Not that I could afford to buy one, mind you, but it would be cool to just drool over.

I suppose I could just buy a cheap laptop, but I wanna be different!

You know, before that post, I really regarded you as nothing more then a spammer who takes a profound intrest in writing meaningless poetry. But I have to say. Your original post is absolutely correct. The more freedom, the better.

You never know. IBM, now Lenovo, is a Chinese company now. I for one refuse to buy Lenove precisely because of that fact, despite the fact that they seem to be rather good pieces of equipment.

You mentions other OSs, Odder...what do you most commonly use? I'm using Ubuntu Linux right now, and I've long been interested in trying BSD (but never found the time).

BSDs seem ta have some promise, Borg, but as of yet they still seem ta be trailin' Linux variants as a whole...

I kinda favor Knoppix, Mepis, 'n Slax...

...while keepin' Kanotix, PCLinux, 'n about a hunderd 'n fifty odder linux variants close at hand...

BSD isn't meant to be an OS for everybody like linux is. It is perfectly happy in it's little niche. If I didn't have Gentoo to make my life easier, I would be using BSD as well.

BSD has a long history of being a solid Unix with good design principles built right into the OS. Something Linux really doesn't have.

Oopz, I ruffled feathers, again!

Sorry...

BSDs, again, in my opinion, have real promise! (They already fullfill the promise ta their "trite 'n true" followers")...

I wuz speakin' of a larger audience, as ya mentioned...

;)

As fer Linux, it's already the "OS fer... EVERY buddy?"

:)

I'm trustin' on yer good humor 'n intelligence ta KNOW Odder meant no insults...

Now, about an OS fer EVERY buddy...

Jest what did'ja mean by THAT... Mac?!?

;)

Thankz fer yer input, my Odder friend...

Like O.J., I gotta cut 'n run now...

But mebbee like the LAPD, ya kin catch me later?

I think you might be reading too much into my post. I'm just trying to bring some perspective to the operating system discourse. A lot of Linux users don't properly understand BSD and its place in the market.
