On this date, Dec 21, 1620, the passengers of the "Mayflower" first came ashore at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.

One of them was my 12x grandpa, Samuel Fuller, age 8.

Of this first group of 100-plus settlers, about half did not survive that first winter. Two of them were Samuel's mom and dad. They died of starvation and disease, or they simply froze to death.

Of that small group of survivors, about half of THOSE were children under age 15.

So, you could say that this first New England colony was basically founded by kids. And thanks to the natives of that place, they lived on.

An interesting historical footnote in our long story.

When the Mayflower later set sail for England, not one of those kids wanted to go back.

Thanks, kids, for being brave.
