This movie came out in 2005, but at the prodding of rendova I've taken the liberty of making a thread about it.

Gladiator-(2000)
Directed by: Ridley Scott
Starring: Russell Crowe, Connie Nielsen, Jaoquin Phoenix, and Richard Harris
Runtime: 155 min.
Rating: R
Worldwide Box Office: $457,640,427
Special Honors: 5 Oscars and many other awards...

Plot synopsis:
After the conquest of German territory, Marcus Aurelius dies under mysterious conditions. Maximus Decimus Meridius, the most trusted and admired general in the Roman legions and close friend of Aurelius, is set to take the throne as emperor. But the conniving son of Aurelius, Commodus, has other plans, and has Maximus sent away to a life of enslavement as a gladiator in far flung parts of the Empire. With the help of his new master, Proximo, Maximus works his way up the gladiator hierarchy and sets off for Rome to defy the empire.

Review:
An epic movie by veteran filmmaker Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise) in a Roman setting. Sweeping vistas, brutal action, and a stark realism that excites and entrances you. The battles had frenetic cinematography, the acting was above decent, character development and romantic relationships were underlying sub-plots, and a well written tale (although fictitious) about intrigue in ancient Rome. The music wasn't particularly memorable, but establishes mood, and there were no innovative steps taken in technical features. But all in all, this movie was well-executed, if you've an interest in history, a hard stomach for violence, and a poetic heart, this movie will hit home. I recommend Gladiator.

So now comes the part where you guys get to chat about the movie. What you liked, disliked, the history surrounding it, the actors and director, etc etc.
Sound off

Gladiator---yay!~

This is my all time favorite movie. It has everything--great acting, a main character you can care about, superb sets and costuming, straight forward directing, an engrossing plot that, tho fictitious, COULD have happened. Nothing fakish here.

My favorite scene is where Maximus pulls off his helmet and tells Commodus exactly who he is and what he intends to do to him. "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius..."

Spoiler--
I DEFY anyone to watch the end and not cry. Tho I've seen this movie at least 20 times, I always choke up. The kids and hubby know to have the box of Kleenex ready. Tho they make jokes, especially Hubby, I can see a tear in their eyes too.

If there wasn't a Maximus, there SHOULD have been. A hero for the ages.

A masterpiece.

(PS. I didn't think it was all that violent myself. Yes, the battle scenes are realistic and the fighting scenes a bit gory--but not overdone.)

Yeah, Gladiator is okay, but your all time favorite movie. Are you forgetting, Ishtar?

I watch this movie about 5 or 6 times a year, and have not cried once.

I saw it when it was released and liked it. But I can't even imagine seeing it 20 times, or even 5 o 6 times a year.

Actually I've never seen any movie more than 3, maybe 4 times. How can you enjoy this ?

Am I the only one here like this or are Evakian and Travh the freaks ?

Whoa there---you said you've seen it three or four times? I've seen it twice, possibly three times if memory serves correctly.

I enjoyed it for the multiple viewings each time, but I'm not one who takes pleasure in overly repetitive viewings of any movie.

No, i've just sen it once. I was saying that I have never seen any movie more than 3 or 4 times (I guess I've seen Star wars 4 times, and a few other movies 3 times).

I like to see twice a movie I really enjoyed, to share it again with people who have not seen it. But more than two or thrre times I find it boring. The same with books.

There's, of course, more than one standard ta judge by here...

How close wuzzit ta what is perceived ta be historical "truth?"

Next, how good a piece of story-'n-film-makin' wuzzit?

Mixed bag on the first.

Thumbs up, in my book, on the second.

Worth watchin'?

HELL, yeah, 'n TAPIN', too!
