At the moment I’m translating original documents pertaining to the Vikings from before the birth of Christ. Actually, it’s my colleague who’s translating them from Latin and ancient Greek into Swedish - and then I translate them further from Swedish into English, German and French.

Would you like a cup of coffee now to wake you up from that exciting description of my work? :)

You guys should make two versions, one you translate by yourselves, and one using Babelfish! Put the second on the web, and try to make a religion out of it!

I think ”Babelfish” is an excellent name for it.

Have you ever heard a fish talk? They probably can but with all the bubbles and babbles it comes out garbled and totally out of wack. I’ve had people try to send me a note that was translated through “Bablefish” into Swedish. About one fourth of it made sense, the rest I had no idea what the writer was trying to say.

What you do sounds fascinating, not boring. I envy you the ability to read and translate into multiple languages.

As someone very interested in Medieval History I find my inability to read original works very frustrating.

I have been trying to find information about a man named Götz von Berlichingen for years. He lived and fought during the Lutheran Reformation in the Neckar region of Germany and was famous for being one of the first people to get a prosthesis (an iron hand) for which he received his nickname, Götz of the Iron Hand. He is also famed for telling the Holy Roman Emperor to, Kiss his ass, an expression that is still known as a Götz in parts of Germany I can read enough German to translate letters from my family but am completely lost when it comes to reading history books.

I sometimes feel like Ross Geller in “Friends” who puts his friends to sleep with his end-of-workday stories, so I don’t always talk about my job.

As you can imagine, I’m rather busy with my professional duties but if you have a German expression or phrase that you’re having trouble with you can send it to me. I can’t promise to translate it “on the spot” but when I get a few minutes I’ll have a look at it. Naturally, I haven’t time to do a whole transcript for you, but an odd word or phrase now and then might be OK! :)
