I finally saw JARHEAD last night, and spent some time reading online reviews, most of which were mixed. On the one hand the cinematography was excellent as were the performances, but some complain about too little action or emotion. I myself thought that while little real action occurred, a great deal of character development took place. Instead of being a movie about explosions, it was a movie about being a soldier before, during, and after a war. How many films actually take this angle and run with it? Some people also complain about the historical inaccuracies in the movie, but I really don't see the need. The film did what it needed to do, and was in fact a MOVIE. I am curious though what the inaccuracies were...anyone know anything about this?
Director Sam Mendes has previously worked on American Beauty and Road to Perdition, two of my favorite movies (AB being #1). Both of these were relatively slow-moving (in a good way), thought-provoking films. JARHEAD does seem to lack this retrospection, and perhaps is the weakest of these 3 films. But considering the high quality work of Mendes, that's hardly a complaint.
