i was searching around for a place i can post my problem and came uppon this site through google..

my problem is, my nic card choses to connect with one cat 5 wire and not another.

my issue is, the cat 5 that works, is too short for me to keep my pc in the desired room. the other one is the perfect size but doesnt work.

windows says "Network Cable Unpluged" when that single cat 5 wire which apparently doesnt work is connected to the onboard nic card..

now what gets me is, this same cat 5 wire that doesnt work on my main PC, works just fine with my 2nd PC.. what boggles me more, is my third PC also doesnt work with it.. same issue.

so i got 1 out of 3 Nic cards that chose to connect with this mysterious cat 5 wire... my i add that all 3 nic cards are onboard and not PCI..

the way i have my network set up is dsl modem to linksys router to 3 PCs if its of any importance..

the driver windows installed for my main PC is "Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC". again, this is the one that doesnt work...

i have tried updating the driver and all that other crap, but nothing seems to work with this..

this seems to be a hardware or software issue - either the nic card or the cat 5 wire..

i am unsure exactly if one of them is a crossover which would expalin alot, but it says nothing of the sort on the wire like that..

The wire that doesnt work says:
"CAT5 ENHANCED PATCH CORD - 4 PAIR 24AWG CM E200534 - VERIFIED TO EIA/TIA 568A FT4 - ELTOP ELECTRONICS"

The wire that does work says:
"RadioShack E129760-D Type CM UTP 24AWG CAT5E"

can anyone explain my issue a bit better and tell me why it is like this?

no i dont want to get a new router or a extra hub or whatever.. i just want to understand whats going on and why it doesnt work so i can find my own way.. plus im interested :)
