View Full Version : How many countries?
How many countries have you visited?
What's your nationality?
It's not about showing off. It's about assessing how well travelled various nationalities are . Business trips don't count.
I'll get the ball rolling:
- English, 30 countries

England, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Luxemburg, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico, and part of the Italian Riviera but never really vacationed in Italy.
On edit: next year I'm flying to China, Russia, and England (again) to conduct business.
American, 7 other countries, 47 U.S. states.
I believe I can find enough versitility in America not to leave the country again.

I remember Luang Phabang in Lao as one of favorites places (Angkor vat being another one) . When did you go there ? My trip there was in 93.

Swedish.
Somewhere between 85 and 100. It depends on whether we count (or discount) countries that have been swallowed up by the political enlargement of neighbouring countries (such as the Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda, the DDR, etc.) and those that have been newly "created" by the fall of East European communism (such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, ect.).
English......
Greece = 1
Spain = 2
Germany = 1
Portugal = 6
Does the Isle of Man count ???
;)

Pretty impressive.
Maybe you could just list the countries where you haven't been.
Have you visited all these places as a tourist or for work ?

I travelled for several years “overland”. You know - I was a “backpacker”. I did work in some of the countries I visited: Norway (Oslo), Germany (Freiburg i.B. and Berlin), France (Annecy), Rhodesia/Zimbabwe (Salisbury/Harare), Vietnam (Tuy Hoa), Australia (Perth and Sydney), U.S.A. (Chicago, San Antonio, Albuquerque, and Duluth).
Where I haven’t been? I’ve never been to South America!
And what about you? Lille? Hmmm. It sounds like there is a good histoire to be told!

I've just been travelling as a tourist, for periods long enough to enjoy a place but not to really know the countries. I hope someday I will have time to travel for a longer duration.
What are the countries and places you liked the most ?
My best travel memories are Lao and Ethiopia. Scotland was great too but it's so damn COLD !

Boy, I'm sure jealous of you Europeans. You get to see and do so much, so easily. I wish I could just hop in my car and go to, like, 5 different countries without having to fear for my life in the process.

Its not a big feat, a day of driving will get a European through a dozen countries, for americans it barely gets you halfway across the country. ;)

You're right, that's great. I live just 15 minutes away from Belgium, and even if the two countries are very similar, it's always nice to cross the border and say"I'm abroad" !
I got lost once while coming back from the shopping mall by the wrong highway, and wandered in Belgium for a few kilometers before finding my way back. You can cross the border without even noticing it.

Yeah! Scotland is nearly as cold as Sweden, the difference being that we’ve got central heating, double-glazing, and insulated plumbing. :D
My favourite countries are Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia and Tunisia, Kenya, Botswana.

"Forget the cold"? I recon the mere stench of simmering hagis would make you forget EVERYTHING you've ever known and make one contemplate joining the community of ghosts on a voluntary basis! :@@: :alien:

It takes about twenty four hours to get half-way across the country. I only had to stop once when driving to Kansas City from Atlanta, and by then I only had a few states to go.

The point is, Nap, that traveling from El Paso to Jasper, Texas, will almost take you 20 hours if you obey the speed limit. Have you ever driven across it? Es isn't lying.

You know, I was thinking about what everybody’s saying and I don’t know if I completely agree about Americans being so terribly disadvantaged.
All that talk about Texas got me thinking about “south of the border”. You can drive through Mexico and on to Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Theoretically, you can continue on to South America but I doubt the roads are that well kept. Travelling through Central America may not be as culturally diverse as doing the same thing through Europe but it is not too shabby a journey, that’s for sure!
If you’re adventurous and really serious about travel, you ought to read “The Old Patagonian Express” by Paul Theroux. He did the journey from East Coast U.S.A. through South America by train - and you can do it too.
In 1973/74 I hitch-hiked from the U.S. through El Paso and down to Puebla de Zaragoza (just beyond Mexico City) and then I took the train from there to Veracruz. It wasn’t all too exciting as far as Mexico City - but that short distance (but long in duration) train journey through the banana-growing mountains was an unexpectedly stunning experience! From the dry, arid flats of Puebla, up into the mountain jungle and then finally descending into the gay, mariachi sea-port City of Veracruz. Wow!
Adventure is available to anyone who meets the challenge, so come on you couch potatoes. Shut off the computer, fire up the Studebaker, and get movin’! :) :thumbs:
