View Full Version : Media: Clinton vs. Bush

On Larry King, President Clinton was saying that President Bush should have met with Cindy Sheehan because he, Clinton, met with parents of the "Black Hawk Down" soldiers, and one of the fathers severely criticized him, wouldn't accept his late son's medals, and wouldn't shake his hand.

I was wondering why I never heard about this. A google search brought me mostly to forums and discussion groups. the only article I could find was about how this event was barely covered by the media.

From Human Events:

"The story eventually bubbled up, albeit packaged with sympathy for the "anguish" of President Clinton. One of the earliest accounts of this came over a year later, in the Jan. 22, 1995, Los Angeles Times Magazine. Reporter Doyle McManus wrote that Clinton had delayed meeting with grieving parents (no media criticism in that case) since aides explained he was shaken by "seeing his own orders lead to tragedy." Clinton extended his hand to Shughart, and the grieving father refused to take it. "You are not fit to be president of the United States," McManus recounted Shugart saying. "The blame for my son's death rests with you."

Another account surfaced in the New York Times on Dec. 28, 2000, as reporter Jane Perlez looked back on Clinton's strained relationship with the military. It is nice that the Times was on the story -- six years, seven months and one week after it happened."

It seems Cindy Sheehan's publicity was just slightly different. If this happened to President Bush, there is NO WAY the coverage would have been that sparse.

Hold on there Bubba, he did meet with Cindy, just not at the time she became a media puppet for left wing propaganda. And Bush has met with various other families of servicemen, makes sense, just like Clinton and his leadership failure of the handling of Somalia.

and one of the fathers severely criticized him, wouldn't accept his late son's medals, and wouldn't shake his hand.

That man reserves the right to have done it.

It wasn't a media event until Cindy camped out in front of Bush's ranch. Did Mr Shughart do the same thing?

Good point.

I don't disagree with those facts, but, in your honest opinion, do you feel that this story would have been equally ignored if it happened to this president?

When and where did Bush meet with Cindy and under what circumstances?

I don't know the place and time, but it was at one of the meetings with family members that he has every once and while. It wasn't a meeting just with her alone - she was one of many.

The original meeting with Sheehan was as sparsely covered as Clinton's meeting was. It only became a big story when she camped out in front of his ranch.

So he really didn't already meet with Cindy on the terms she is now asking for -- face to face.

That sounds about right ... bush does a focus group where Cindy is in section 203, row 45, seat 86 and he considers that meeting with Cindy and Hannity swears to it.

It would have been ignored by those in the media who are on the right and harped on by those who are on the left.

Another good point, and given the circumstances, what do you think that says about our media here?

He hasn't met with her since she started asking for a face to face. The meeting with her was before she became famous.

Well, if that dude says it, then it must be true. I'm sold!

Yes, one non-liberal news source appears on the television and its proof that the media isn't far left.
Foxnews is one channel, one.
