I recently decided to be vegan. This means no animal products. No dairy, no eggs, no animal fats, no meat, and in some cases no honey.
I feel the healthiest when I am vegan.
What do you think?

This means no animal products. No dairy, no eggs, no animal fats, no meat, and in some cases no honey.
Things you eat, drink, cook, and bake with taste bad and be no fun to make, not to mention smell rancid.
Your diet is going to swing into the curb, its not going to be exactly nutrious and all-around a good supplemental energizer.
It will also be hard to get around this in today's modern world and diets.
There is nothing wrong with killing an animal, or using an animal, for your meal. It is an animal, not a human being.
Besides, if you refuse to eat animals because they are living creatures too, well, so are those poor little plants you're eating.
All in all, you, being a growing young woman, may want to reconsider this as you need a large caloric intake full of the wide spectrum of foods so you can grow and develop healthfully.
Just looking out for you :)

I appreciate it, but i think i'm okay.
I'm lucky I live in today's world. There are vegan cheeses, soymilk, vegan mayo, vegan meat. And its all organic and natural.
And I do get all my vitamins and minerals and enough calories. What do you think I eat? Dust?
Calcium-broccoli, kale, tofu, molasses, sesame seeds, soy milk, almonds, corn tortilla, colllard greens, turnip greens
Magnesium-brown rice, cooked spinach, black beans, almonds, legumes, bananas, whole grains
Iron-green leafy veggies, legumes, beans, nuts, seeds, watermelon, cream of wheat,
(gotten from a vegan cookbook)
Thats just naming a few. Plus vegan alternatives are full of the vitamins and minerals we would be getting in the real thing. Everything that I eat is considered before I put it in my mouth. I plan out what I am going to eat ahead of time so that I can be sure I am getting the nutrients I need. And I take vitamins and herbs daily.
And vegan ice cream tastes better than regular ice cream! Same with cake!
--According to the late Dr. Benjamin Spock, in the latest edition of his book Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care, “Children who grow up getting their nutrition from plant foods rather than meats … are less likely to develop weight problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer.”(5)
Children do not need dairy products in order to grow up strong and healthy. The former director of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University Dr. Frank Oski says, “There is no reason to drink cow’s milk at any time in your life. It was designed for calves, it was not designed for humans, and we should all stop drinking it today, this afternoon.”(18) Dr. Benjamin Spock agreed, saying, “[T]here was a time when cow’s milk was considered very desirable. But research, along with clinical experience, has forced doctors and nutritionists to rethink this recommendation.”(19)--

*dryheaves* calling it meat and cheese is a stretch, no?

Magnesium-brown rice, cooked spinach, black beans, almonds, legumes, bananas, whole grains
Iron-green leafy veggies, legumes, beans, nuts, seeds, watermelon, cream of wheat
*dryheaves again* what about taste? its natural to eat animals/animal products and good for you, plus we're omnivores, so all is well.
“Children who grow up getting their nutrition from plant foods rather than meats … are less likely to develop weight problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer.”
Give me a steak and donuts along with a heart attack anyday, i'd rather live short and eat well then eat crap for a long time.
“There is no reason to drink cow’s milk at any time in your life. It was designed for calves, it was not designed for humans, and we should all stop drinking it today, this afternoon.”
Why doctor nutca- i mean Oski, why abandon a great tasting, overall healthy drink?
It was designed for calves, it was not designed for humans, and we should all stop drinking it today, this afternoon.”
Hogwash, i suppose i need to stop eating fruit, because that is "for the ground"
And vegan ice cream tastes better than regular ice cream!
You poor soul, you've been eating that soybean curd garbage so long you forgot about how ice cream tastes ;)

I was only vegan for a year when i was 9 and I've only been one now for a week! Its not like I've been eating it my whole life. Besides, my parents eat meat.
*dryheaves again* what about taste? its natural to eat animals/animal products and good for you, plus we're omnivores, so all is well.
I happen to like veggies and think they taste very good. The only reasons we're omnivores is through evolution. And what about ppl who are lactose intolerent?

Then, in my opinion, you are very stupid.
Hogwash, i suppose i need to stop eating fruit, because that is "for the ground"
Ok, thats just stupid. Fruit grows on trees and bushes. And if we can drink cow milk, why not cat milk or whale milk??
Where do you get your protein from? I saw something on tv where this girl was vegan and she decided to take vitamins for protein...but I don't know...
I get it from seeds and nuts and vegan meat substitutes. I also get it from combining certain carbs.

Yes because a short life of bliss is so stupid to pick over a long life of misery

Because cow milk is produced in large quantities with a domesticated livestock animal, it also is edible and nutritious for humans to eat. Cats do not have such options, nor whales (whale milk??? narsty)

Being a veganism is not miserable. The food is great. It also goes well with exercise and meditation.

I would like to see you feed a calve people milk.
--Cow’s milk is the number one cause of food allergies in infants and children, according to the American Gastroenterological Association.(20) Millions of Americans are lactose-intolerant, and an estimated 90 percent of Asian-Americans and 75 percent of Native and African-Americans suffer from the condition, which can include symptoms such as bloating, gas, cramps, vomiting, headaches, rashes, or asthma.(21) As early as 2 years of age, most people begin to produce less lactase, the enzyme that helps with the digestion of milk. This reduction can lead to lactose intolerance.(22) Breast-feeding mothers should shun cow’s milk from their diets, too, as the proteins can be transferred to the infant and upset the baby’s intestines.--

I love cow's milk, 'tis my favorite drink, i hope i can one day find a milk bar like the one in Clockwork Orange :)
Meh, allergies aside, cow milk provides some good dietary supplements.
Good luck with your new lifestyle, or, revisiting of it. If you enjoy that food, good for you, eat it since it makes you happy and invigorates your body. I am sure no harm will come to you since you are a young growing girl, just eat enough non-junk food and you'll make out fine. Best of wishes.

Okay, let's talk about design. Our bodies were designed, if you will, to subsist primarily on a diet of both meat and vegetables. Not eating meat is unhealthy. Not eating vegetables in unhealthy. Period.

I think it's great that you can be a vegan. I myself...I love milk products way too much to let it go. I also love my vegetables too(raw..not cooked). I actually get most of my protein from beans and assorted nuts.
I don't think I would ever have the will power to become a total vegan...but I congratulate you on your part for having the will to do it. More power to ya.

Well Dio, that is an interesting article, i liked alot of the questions it answered, plus its just common sense: humans are supposed to eat animals (and vegetables), cutting out half your diet will of course lead to bad repercussions.
Being a temporary vegetarian may help for a short amount of time for people to loose weight and recover from that state, but should not be followed regularly throughout your life.

Interesting article. I'll go by myth.
Myth 1
I've never looked at it that way. And I'd have to say I don't think meat consumption leads to famine and such. I've never heard that said. I am pro-mixed farm.
Myth 2
It is true that vegans living in certain parts of India do not suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency. This has led some to conclude that plant foods do provide this vitamin. This conclusion, however, is erroneous as many small insects, their eggs, larvae and/or residue, are left on the plant foods these people consume, due to non-use of pesticides and inefficient cleaning methods. Heh, all produce that I eat is organic. And I take supplements and herbs containing B12. Also my biology techer used to work at a Heinz factory and said there was an average of about 12 insects in every container of catsup.
Myth 3
Supplements and herbs.
Myth 4
Vitamin A-carrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, apricots, spinach, kale, green leafy vegetables, broccoli
Myth 5
Such stupendous claims are hard to reconcile with historical and anthropological facts. All of the diseases mentioned are primarily 20th century occurrences, yet people have been eating meat and animal fat for thousands of years
*cough* fast food*cough*
Myth 6
Once again, that was before people were eating 6000 calories a day. We were watching a video in health class which said that the body only needed the amount of fat in 1 Tablespoon of cooking oil to be healthy. I get more than that in a scoop of almond tofutti(soy ice cream).
Myth 7
What I say to that is that to be vegetarian of vegan you need to know what you are doing. You have to plan what you are going to eat before you plan the meal so that you can get all the nutrients you need. If you just eat lots of salads you aren't going to get all the nutrients you need.
Myth 8
I must agree. It would be great if it were true that cavemen eat a lean vegetarian diet, but lets not be stupid here.
Myth 9
It does not appear, then, that meat or saturated fat consumption has risen in this century. What has gone up, however, is consumption of margarine and other trans-fatty acids, lifeless, packaged "foods," processed vegetable oils, pasteurised/homogenised milk, commercially raised livestock and plant foods, and refined sugar
and McDonald's mystery meat.
Myth 10
On a purely nutritional level, soybeans, like all legumes, are deficient in cysteine and methionine, vital sulphur-containing amino acids (56). Soybeans are also lacking in tryptophan, another essential amino acid
I must chuckle at this. We don't eat tofu by itself. We combine it with vegetables with incomplete amino acids such at squash and make a complete protein.
Myth 11
The human body is not designed for meat consumption. Everything is possible through evolution. Look to the future. "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. -Albert Einstein
Myth 12
Eating animal flesh causes violent, aggressive behaviour in humans. Ok, thats just silly.
Myth 13
I believe if you are going to eat meat, eat "organic" meat.
Myth 14
Help! Help! The meat eaters are being repressed!! I think this is true on an individual basis. I personally am a very spiritual person and feel a connection with the earth(and my dieties) when I am vegan.
Myth 15
Without question, commercially raised livestock live in deplorable conditions where sickness and suffering are common. Additionally, some prescription drugs are derived from animals (e.g., Premarin) in torturous ways. In America, at least, livestock animals are exempted from anti-cruelty laws
Anti-cruelty laws do not apply to poultry, I've heard. I'll look into that. And as I've said before, I we lived in the wild without modern conviences I would feel totally fine eating meat.

And their are thousands on your eyebrows alone at this very moment, so what?
I must agree. It would be great if it were true that cavemen eat a lean vegetarian diet, but lets not be stupid here.
So they would have whithered away and died, would have been great to halt our existance. There are no supermarkets where the cro magnon men could go to pick up vitamin bottles and soy supplements, without the modern "organic" and engineered foods for such diets, you would all die out.
and McDonald's mystery meat.
Cow, the FDA checks them out all the time.
I must chuckle at this. We don't eat tofu by itself.
I've seen it and done it, people sprinkle some seasoning on and chomp down.
Everything is possible through evolution. Look to the future.
So we need to spend the next century eating only veggies and faux garbage so our children will change over time? Outrageous! We will die from killing each other before we even have time to adapt like that anyway
"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. -Albert Einstein
Oh yes, and mr. Einstein is such a great cultural philosopher, and should i get my financial advice from shakespeare?
Albert was a mathematician and number theorist, and that is what we can trust him to do.

That's not what organic meat is. Organic meat is where the animal is allowed to live properly instead of being kept in stalls and such. Personally, I can't tell the difference between organic and plain ol' Publix meat. A steak is a steak. So long as it's cooked medium to medium-rare. An overcooked steak is an unhappy steak.

My hubby works at Red Gold in Elwood Indiana...(for those of you who haven't heard of Red Gold, it is a tomato processing plant) that is so true about the insects....but I bet you didn't know that there have also been frogs and snakes that have gotten into the product as well.., but that is before it goes through the evaporater and the cookers, so by the time it is ready to be bottled....it is totally clean and clear of any contaminates. This factory is so monitored by the FDA that even the maintenance mechanics have to be able to pass all the inspections even for the rooms that arent associated within the factory. Right now they are in what is called "fresh pack'. It is all fresh picked tomatoes they are using instead of the regular paste they usually use in the off season. Needless to say, after I found out how bad it smells when they make ketchup...I don't eat it anymore. It is really stinky.
