Anime is full of sex and violence and demonic creatures...hard to get around that most of the time.
Seeing as how your child probably doesn't speak japanese, and how the american versions are cleaner....the classic Dragonball trilogy of shows make for great entertainment (although i have only seen japanese versions). But alot of anime is too risque for ten year olds.
Movies: Metropolis, Princess Mononke, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away, Akira (not for her), Ghost in the Shell (not for her) make up some of the list of great anime flicks.

Sure, anime has a bit of violence, but sex? Not all of em have sex, buddy! They're categorized. Hentai is mainly sex. The other ones rarely contain sex. For example:
Spiritied Away - Violence? No. Sex? None.
Inuyasha - Violence? Sure. Sex? Of course not.
Sailor Moon - Violence? A bit. Sex? Of course not.
There's nothin wrong with Violence in an anime. Be a doll and name one anime with neither violence or sex, Evakian. I'll watch it...and it'll probably be very crappy. The only anime/manga I can think of with neither of each is Fruits Basket. It's a VERY good series, but there are some dark elements to it.
Besides...it's the 21st century...what DOESN'T have sex and violence?

Evakian, you forgot My Neighbour Tototo and Porco Rosso in your list.
In fact, any movie by Miyazaki is a good choice.

Sex isnt just some 14 inch demon dick ram fucking some poor schoolgirl, it can be the sexual chemistry created by characters, the sexual innuendo and the like which im afraid to say most of the anime's have.

I don't think innuendo is a problem for my sister's kid, she's got a progressive parenting strategy. I guess it's the specific kind of violence (anti-woman, gory) that can show up in anime that bothers her and I think that knowing Nicole (my niece) my sister's right about what she's ready for.
Her favorite right now is Zatch Bell, I guess it's on CN. It seems pretty cool. The characters are cool. There’s a guy, Kiyo who’s an arrogant high schooler, and he’s got this little “mamodo” guy named Zatch who’s his friend, and they like battle other little dudes to become the best “mamodo” of all of ‘em. Lots of wacky characters and weird stuff happening. You can check it out at http://www.zatch-bell.com. I like it a lot better than other trainer game anime I've seen. Nice to have kids around to say in touch with this stuff. :)

What is a progressive parenting strategy ?
abortretryfail
09-16-2005, 01:29 PM
One where she doesn't ban her kid from participating in things but instead makes sure to sit down with Nicole and put whatever's in question into context. Like sex stuff. I guess she's just very involved. She's a psychologist that does work with family counseling, so she's always trying out stuff.

Now you're lying, plus i said:

I never said all in it together and i never said all the time.
Sure, anime has a bit of violence, but sex?
A bit of violence??? we're talking about tarantino size amounts of blood and guts! and sex? all the time nudity, innuendo, and bestiality.
Not all of em have sex, buddy!
Never said they did.
They're categorized. Hentai is mainly sex.
Hentai is a porn movie animated in anime style of art. Anime itself can still have sex and not be hentai, i hardly consider movies like Sin City to be a porn film just because there is sex and nudity.
Spiritied Away - Violence? No. Sex? None.
That was on my list of good viewing for a young girl.....yuo engrish weed gud?
Inuyasha - Violence? Sure. Sex? Of course not.
Maybe not in american versions....
Sailor Moon - Violence? A bit. Sex? Of course not.
Do not, i repeat, do not let your child view sailor moon ever, it is a disgrace of a show that will turn your kids into crazed girls or strange guys, like Reven here :D
Be a doll and name one anime with neither violence or sex, Evakian. I'll watch it...and it'll probably be very crappy.

Nah, it is a more involved strategy usually, involving the parents reviewing what they allow their children to see, and discuss things more openly with their children, it leads to a greater amount of trust and expression in the child, as well as a higher sense of maturity sometimes.

Oh ANIME [and manga]! The sweet seducing power, that it holds over so many people [including me :@@: ]. Sadly, I've gone beyond love, it's consumed me whole and is a part of me, and I hope it will be for the rest of my god forsaken life! The only reason I've come back to post is because of this one thing, and reven telling me to come in here, and defend anime's honor...or something like that [I wasn't paying attention].
Yes, I'll agree. There is some anime out there that kids shouldn't watch, but a lot of it, is no worse then the crap people watch on TV now-a-days. Yeah sure blood, sex, violence...you can find that shit anywhere [and don't you dare say you can't!], wouldn't it be better to see it in cartoon. I mean it's never great for a kid to watch that, but I think a 10 year old can handle it [I also happen to like Zatch Bell]!
It also depends on her mom, she says it's the best for her, but even if she doesn't see this stuff now, eventually she will. I've been watching anime for most of my [almost] 16-year-old life, and I have been buying it, and manga [japanese comics], for a very long time now. I just went to my first con this year back in March, and I'm already making plans to go next year in April [cosplaying anyone?].
I'm also proud to say, I'm a good kid [most of the time]. I don't smoke, drink, get into fights, or do any of that other crap! Why? Mainly because, I think it's the anime [and manga]. Everyday, I can smile, I can be happy, becasue I know it exist. Yes, that might be a tad sad, but does your opinion really matter? If Nicole watches anime, good for her! She should be proud that she's becoming a part of such a great fandom [that is, if she stays with it].
I remember this time when I was in some book store, checking out the manga section ["Oh yeah!" says the kool aid man], when this lady with her two [around 12, 11] kids pop in. One of the kids asked his mom if he could get one, and I was like "Right on kid!"...from the sidelines. Then his mom tells him that he can't, since she needs to look through it first, my thought? Okay well, nice lady I guess. But then she goes on saying how all manga and anime, are made for adults, but some of them are less "wrong" then others, I was like :)....WHAT THE FUCK!!! Lady, have you been taking your kids ADD medicine or something? How can you be soooo misinformed?!...But then I just shrughed, and thought "Though luck!"
I know that had nothing to do with anyhting, but eh! Anywho onto animes that I think Nicole should watch?:
TV ones:
Zatch Bell-CN
Naruto [stupid clean CN version!]-CN
.hack//Legend of the twilight-CN
One piece [OMG!!! It's been mutilated so!]-CN
Mew Mew power...or something like that-WB
BeyBlade [God I loved this one...cuz them dudes were hot!]-Disney, ABC
I got to say, if she wants real good anime, sure TV stuff if fine, but she should buy some DvDs. Here are some good series that I like, and are clean:
Princess Tutu [this one rocks!!]
Cardcaptor Sakura
Kodocha
FRUITS BASKET!!!!! [this is the shit!!!!!!!!!!!!exclamation mark!!!]
Pretear
Hikaru no Go [this one isn't out yet, but it will soon]
Ultra Maniac
Shaman King
GRAVITATION!!! [kidding...this one is yaoi....mmmm~<3<3...I hate being a fangirl...It's better if some of you don't find out what yaoi is...trust me]
and a bunch of other stuff I don't feel like typing out, but if you are looking for some good clean ones, there are tons. 'nuff said!

Gay hentai. Originally concieved as "stories for women" but quickly got adopted as the term for all gay anime
The thing I've found about Yaoi is that all the guys are drawn to be really feminine in the face, why is that?

Poor parenting, pornography everywhere, and a neutral school system lead to perverts and twisted children. In three years that niece of yours will be involved in a world of drinking, smoking, and all sorts of sexual deviance. If she finds anime entertaining, let her read it, but be sure to get her parents to monitor just exactly what she is reading. She may develop into one of those anime goths that obsesses over "strange things", but at least she's reading ;)

It's a good thing to escape from reality once in a while (and in our case, most of the time). What do you read? Wall Street Journal? Just because some people do things that you don't like, doesn't necessarily make them freaks and "brainwashed."
Pokemon and Hello Kitty are things that KIDS enjoy. I was, what, 9 when Pokemon came out? Of course I enjoyed it, because it looked awesome? What the hell do you expect kids at that age to watch? The History Channel? Seriously, man!

Of course I enjoyed it, because it looked awesome?

To me, pornography goes farther than just being sexual entertainment, as my little scenario with the toys demonstrates---the blatant materialism of the american culture over here and the taking advantage of the children sicken me.
Whenever i say Violent Pornography- it goes beyond choking chicks and sodomy.
I find the truth displayed on the History channel to be extremelly interesting.
Much of their programming is about WW2, which gets tiresome. When they talk about medieval conflicts i am all ears though.
Plus that drill saregeant from fulll metal jacket hosts a show on the history channel.

Sure anime isn't as "pure" as it used to be, but you gotta remember that the japanese are far more open minded then our god forsaken country is [US of A!!!...bah]. It's not our fault that this place [or where...ever you are from] brainwashed into thinking that all things foreign are evil.
"Oh my God!!! They just said the F-word, and showed some naughty things!! Call the senate, the president, God hates these heathens!"
I've seen some people react like this before, and no, not all of them were mothers, and not all the mothers were members of the "We hate stuff, beacuse we aren't getting any!" club.

No, i try to stay current. I watch Inuyasha on occasion..i especially liked Trigun. Cowboy Bebop, and some others, mainly i watch Anime movies since i don't like watching TV shows. although the dragonball trilogy of shows was perhaps one of my favorite ever (i only saw the japanese version, so i dont know how they raped it in america). And i liked speed racer :D
Sure anime isn't as "pure" as it used to be, but you gotta remember that the japanese are far more open minded then our god forsaken country is [US of A!!!...bah].
I love how it just so happens that the anime "freaks" as they are called, adore japan over there own country (USA) and say its more open minded and better. Japan is one of the most conservative, if not the most, cultures in history. And alot of their stuff is just...different...It lacks the rules of western writing, characters, and places, it goes off on wild tangents, and has a very bizarre sense of corny asian humor (the funny facial expressions and overexaggerated motions)
It's not our fault that this place [or where...ever you are from] brainwashed into thinking that all things foreign are evil.
Seeing how our culture developed out of an amalgamation of various others from the mass amount of immigration, that is far from true. The growing popularity of mexican food is one example.
All in all, i just don't like the materialistic obsession campaigns that are waged by Japanese franchises like the Pokemon phenom. And i find some anime just bizarre. But it has excellent action, and i like the visual style.
Just chill dude, and go get a slim jim or something...
Good idea, i think i will. In preparing for the oncoming storm that will hit me friday/saturday, i went and emptied the store shelves of slim jims, so i have many containers :)

Uh.... but since those are the only two complex things I can say in Japanese, I prefer my anime subtitled. But, I'll take it dubbed, if that's the way it has to be to be free.
The connoiseur should be happy that the idiot masses are now able to partake of this stuff.
I remember when I was watching cartoons there was nothing from Japan on. There was no alternative to Hollywood at all. It was Hanna Barberra or die.
Watching my niece freely choose Zatch Bell over any other show she could be watching is pretty damn cool. She eats the stuff up. I ask her why, and she doesn't say dumb things like "I like ponies", she says that she likes it because the things that the characters find important are different from what people in school and on other shows do, and she likes (and she actually used these words) "the diversity".
Hearing that from the mouths of babes makes me thing that squabbling about dubs is a bit silly...

I think there are many manga artists out there who have very good drawing and plot making skills who would love to make serious manga series for adults, but they succumb to the money that dumbing down the story and making characters young and cute can bring. It's annoying.
The series that I enjoy available here in the US are ones that try not succumbing to this marketing pressure. The artists try to make something good that won't look stupid to a more mature audience, series like G.T.O and Vagabond. Naruto is actually amazing in that I think it's accessible for both adults and younger audience, like the dragon ball series were.

Oh she's a total geek, I love it. She's one of those kids that already has a fully formed adult living in her just trying to express herself through that little kid brain/body. Truth is, I remember well being her age and I was a lot less "pure" than she at the time. I was listening to George Carlin and stealing porno mags from the store and stuff...
