This recent story about ‘American butterflies invasion’ doing harm to crops in Georgia, Caucasus, actually has little to do with agriculture. It rather relates politics. When I saw it in the web I really got a big chuckle of it. I shouldn’t have to. Georgians take it seriously and they take it in terms of politics. It was the last drop for poverty stricken Georgians.
Now they say that ‘Georgia used to be a Switzerland of the USSR, while Americans made it a refuse pit’!.
How did those damned insects got into Georgia? I have no idea. Frankly, I am least interested to know. The meat of the story is that Georgians are feeling demeaned by America. Is Georgian president Saakashvili steering the country in the rightful direction? His every failure adds to degrading the image of American democracy in Georgia. Why does this poverty continue in his country getting our huge financial aid? It wouldn’t strike me if in a year or two Georgians will take to the streets and demand our withdrawal.
