HOUSTON -- YOU HAVE A PROBLEM

Right now there are hundreds of busses on the highway transporting refugees from the Superdome in New Orleans to the Astrodome in Houston, Texas. Somebody needs to tell Houston that trouble is on the way.

How many people are going to be bussed to the Astrodome? Twenty thousand? Thirty? Many, perhaps most of these people have nothing left in New Orleans. They have no homes to return to, no personal belongings, no jobs. There is no reason for them to go back, and there is no law that can keep them confined to the Astrodome. They're not under arrest. They will be free to leave when they wish, and go where they want. These aren't the cream of the crop. Some of the people who will take up residence -- for a while -- may have been looting jewelry stores in New Orleans yesterday. Many are from the various New Orleans welfare housing projects.

Are you ready, Houston?

OK SISKO, SO WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE WITH THESE PEOPLE

Since you asked ... how about some of our military installations? Many of these are slated for closing. They have empty barracks, unused mess halls and all of the medical and sanitary facilities you might need. Katrina refugees could be moved in. While there they could start job training classes and could gain experience working to maintain the facility as they live and learn basic economic survival skills.

Just a thought ... but it actually makes too much sense.

Ready for what? Rather than insinuate, why don't you specify what it is Houston should be afraid of?

Not a half bad idea.

Obviously these people were hit by a hurricane because they lacked basic economic skills...

The part about utilizing military bases sounds ok, the rest is of dubious value.

I like the use of the military base... Here's what I don't understand... they have the manpower now to move these people. They knew the storm was coming, why didn't they do this prior to?

I would have to agree. There is a Marine Corp Assault ship which just left Virginia Thursday. It should reach New Orleans in a few days with it's helicopters. They would have been more valuable if the ship had left before the storm hit. They knew it was heading for the gulf coast, and they knew how powerful it was. Why didn't they move sooner?

he has a good point though. most of the young men are the ones who didnt take education seriously. didnt have jobs, and that part of n.o. has one of the highest gang populations in the u.s. drug dealers with no sense of community. most of the people are decent , but it only takes a few bad ones to give the rest a bad name......oh, the army barracks, great idea ! you will need order

I would imagine he/she means that Houston should prepare for all the crime that comes along with housing these unfortunates.

I imagined the same thing, but I feel if someone makes veiled racist remarks, they should be asked to be more specific.

Huh?

No need to call, they invited them. Today they raised their limit to 75,000. As Freethinker might ask, "Mah Gawd, look at all dem peeple we's helpin. I thought us NASCAR, gunns an dayth paynullty folk were mean an stoopid"

Ask a texan: NASCAR is the antichrist.
The Death Penalty is practically a sport though.

You have to admire what Houston is doing, these people may just use up Houston's SS and other gov funds and cause crime or take jobs away from those less fortunate already in Houston, but they are spending alot of time, effort, and money to care for their fellow man whether it will benefit them or hinder them.

My hat goes off to Houston's generosity for their neighbors.
