I just seen footage of New Orleans showing hundreds of caskets floating down the water...buildings starting to give way to the wear.

Anyone heard from Drew (if anyone here knows him personally.)

Here's to hoping everyone's alright.

If he lives in the actual city, he's probably underwater right now. Hopefully he lives in a suburb or something.

Chances are he is in the majority that left the city before the storm actually hit and staying with a friend. If not, he is probably looting a wal mart or sleeping in the superdome.

I've thought about this, and if his server was down (the one that hosts Allforums), I don't think we'd be communicating. I do hope Drew's okay, though. Oh, and we shouldn't forget about our resident porn and fake titties fan, Jenny Gadling. She's in New Orleans, too.

The city's now 80% under water....and a former mayor has declared it a possible Pompeii. Anyone think its possible New Orleans is gone forever?

Naaaaaaaaaaaaah, they'll pump the sucker out... damn but I always wanted to visit there...

The worst thing I saw was the man wandering zombie like with his two kids... his wife had finally said to him, you can't hold me any longer...let me go... so he did... that is one wicked thing to live with...

I can't watch any more of it... it's overwhelming...

I'm alive! We evactuated.

I'm staying with my wife's parents in St Louis for now - maybe for a while actually.

We plan to go back in Monday to check our house & take stuff out before the looters do. The area was flooded but I'm not sure how much. It's nothing like the worst hit areas.

Made it out OK ~ that's great.

Looking at the coverage on the tube is mesmerizing- like seeing a slow motion train wreck - you can't not watch.

Lemmie propose a question.

If NO is 80% destroyed do you think the town should spring up somewhere else above sea level?

I always wondered why people would build a city below sea level, between the mouth of the Mississippi and lake Pontchartrain and in huricane territory. Southern optimisim I quess or maybe stupidity.

The property values in New Orleans right now is zero and will remain low for as long as people remember this storm.

It's hard to start anew when you can't sell the old.

I was living in Biloxi when Camile came through - I thought it was bad, but Katrina makes it look like a summer shower!

Actually, it's probably not a bad time to buy property there, sit on it, and flip it in a year or two. There will be people looking to sell for rock bottom prices. I used to love the French quarter - in particular, Dicky Brennans and Broussard's. I've had some really fine meals there...

No I think they should take a clue from the Netherlands and instead of rejecting what they said because it was viewed as critical, learn from it... Why do people have to get their shorts in a knot and be all insulted when they could in fact gain something. Hubris... man's downfall!

clue from the Netherlands

Much different climate and conditions down in the Gulf Coast, doing what The Netherlands does could result in it being either too difficult or ineffectual.

Drew I'm glad you're okay!

But I do have to say something about this. Most everyone who has been on TV who has been through this storm, has been rather un-educated, poor, and could hardly speak english. I was rather sad to see that so many people in our country have fallen to such a level...and people are being raped, and people are shooting the police and everything seems to be going wrong. Don't get me wrong, I love this country. But so many people in this country make me sick...what the hell is wrong with people...

That's because they're interviewing the people still in New Orleans, those who couldn't evacuate. Most of them because they couldn't afford to or didn't have anywhere to go.

Good point. If only I had some money... If I was a billionare I know I'd buy out the city. It'd give people cash in order to find new places to live, and then you could rebuild it and become a trillionare.

I understand why we are seeing these people, but just because you're poor does not mean you have to be dumb, and does not mean you shouldn't be able to speak english properly. I know plenty of homeless kids and kids who are from broken homes like those and they can at least speak english well.

Watching it is horrifying... and their governor what ever her name is got on tv and began back-patting other governors for their help. The reporter ripped a strip off of her and gave her a reality check; "people need to hear when help is coming not thank yous to other governors... He further added that he had earlier witnessed a corpse in the street being eaten by rats. Politicians...she is campaigning in the midst of her state's biggest crisis... someone near her should have bitch-slapped her.

Those are all specific cases. In general, less money relates to a lower education. It's quite unfair to expect everybody to have about the same quality of an education as you, especially those who most certainly cannot afford it.

Or that books cost more than food.

And again, Blib, if you had ready correctly I said I know people who are high school dropouts, have lived in abusive, poor homes, who have lived in just as horrible conditions as these people, and can speak proper english and at least make sense when they speak. These people can hardly put a thought together, and it's not about being poor or not having education, it's about being lazy and not caring, something that is rather large in our culture today.

OD, if you had read correctly I said that you were looking at specific cases, cases that you cannot attempt to attribute to any other person than the certain one you got that idea from. Your assumption comes from a very small percentage of people in those conditions, average IQ is average for a reason, that's the majority. Most poor only have average intelligence, you're looking at those with above average intelligence.

How does this change the fact that they should still be able to speak proper english? Yes, I was looking at specific cases, but after talking to several family members who have been there and after being in the south myself, I think it's say to assume that many people there cannot speak proper english and seeing it on the news makes ME sick. Period. Being poor or un-educated is not an excuse to not be able to speak properly or at least to where you make SENSE.

So if you only have an average IQ you are now given an excuse not to be able to speak properly? Errr.....

I guess if you sit down and take a look at the results of Katrina, it takes alot out of you. It's something that not alot of people were paying attention to until the video tapes of all the people there came through on the media. Its sad... so sad... that the cordination to help these people is going so slow. I thank god that I don't have relatives in New Orleans. With Bush in the office, I don't know if he is going to help things or hurt them. He took such positive gesture in bringing the national guard to New Orleans due to the minority. He is a racist, stupid, idiotical president. I worry living in Maryland, that my life is one step closer to a un-natural death due to terrorism that is getting multiplied every day. Everyone know's damn well that the quick reaction to 9/11 was a huge mistake. He is the worst president in US history. What is so sad is that he is actually even worse then his father. A war monger that is not scared of decisions coming back at him. Freakly I could care less about what he has to say in his speech today, all it is going to be is a pre- set speech. Something that they are putting a milk bottle in his mouth over. " Don't say this, no numbers, no talk of military, etc..."

I wish there was a way for American citizens to fill out a ballet, after the voting process, to kick out a president. Having the evil fu$ker in the Oval Office is not right. Let him jump into oil on his own time, in his own clothes. See if he likes it...

He will be no where near anything when he gets there, I can tell you that much. He is even worse then Joseph Stallion in some ways. Prices on gas have risen a two dollars a gallon. Jobs are at an all time low due to moral of America as a whole. His own cabinet doesn't know his motives anymore. He think's purely in a striaght line that is at an all time low. Somewhere downstairs with the demons. Maybe some of you will read this and hate me for not being more supportive of the American way of things, and maybe some of you won't. If you are against what I am saying, then you won't have more to say then a paragraph like President Bu$h.

Here's a tip: no one will ever know that you've had a lobotomy if you wear a wig to hide to the scars. To quote Thomas Brackett Reed: "They never open their mouths without subtracting from the sum of human knowledge."

Simply amazing...

There are many reasons for their poor english. These are the very, very poor of our society. These people have been raised by very, very poor parents and gone to very, very poor schools. Children learn to speak from listening to their parents, if the parents have an accent, the child will have one. If the parents are speaking a combination of slave mumbo, street jargon and cajun, the child will learn to speak that way. When these kids get old enough to go to school, they go to sub-standard schools with little to no money, consequently only the worst teachers (ones that can't teach up top the standards of better schools) end up teaching these kids.

Another reason is that these people come from generations of welfare families. They have been taken care of with our tax money for generations, many have no desire to improve, heck, the government is basically paying them to sit around and do nothing. These are people who have for generations believed that the government owes them, they don't like or trust authority. Many of them are angry that they live like they do but have no understanding of how to improve their life.

These people come from a very different culture than the working poor or the poor people you meet here in Portland.
