President Bush has crawled out from under the rock he has been hiding under in Crawford, Texas to sign a pile of ‘Disaster Declarations’.
This will enable the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to move tons of supplies into the states effected by Hurricane Katrina.
Generators, water, ice and food and other emergency commodities will be moved into the region for immediate deployment once the storm passes.
What is FEMA?
Herman, the spokescrab for FEMA can tell you all about it on their website.
http://www.fema.gov/kids/
The website also teaches children how to be prepared for disasters and prevent disaster damage. They can learn what causes disasters, play games, read stories and become a Disaster Action Kid.
Federal Emergency Management Agency became part of the Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
FEMA helps people before and after a disaster. FEMA is called in to help when the President declares a disaster.
Disasters are "declared" normally after hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes or other similar events strike a community.
The Governor of the state must ask for help from the President before FEMA can respond.
In the case of Hurricane Katrina apparently the State Governors or Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi asked for help or President Bush jumped the gun. These ‘Disaster Declarations’ have been signed before the disaster happened.
It seems that President Bush has taken the idea of protecting Americans a bit too far. Having failed to protect Americans from the Arabs he now intends to protect us from God.

Fact is that FEMA was in operation before Bush was President.
It does do some good relief work.

FEMA actually appears to be one of the few government programs that works in reality.

Louisiana should have been high on the list for FEMA's biggest disaster mitigation grant program -- so why did the state get nothing?

New Orleans district of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers faces Cuts

...
Landrieu said the Bush administration is not making Corps of Engineers funding a priority.

I think it's extremely shortsighted, Landrieu said. When the Corps of Engineers' budget is cut, Louisiana bleeds. These projects are literally life-and-death projects to the people of south Louisiana and they are (of) vital economic interest to the entire nation.

The Corps' budget could still be beefed up, as it is every year, through congressional additions. Last year, Congress added $20 million to the overall budget of the New Orleans district but a similar increase this year would still leave a $50 million shortfall.

One of the hardest-hit areas of the New Orleans district's budget is the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, which was created after the May 1995 flood to improve drainage in Jefferson, Orleans and St. Tammany parishes. SELA's budget is being drained from $36.5 million awarded in 2005 to $10.4 million suggested for 2006 by the House of Representatives and the president.

3000 National guard members and their equipment sure would have helped as well.

Heh....I was just listening to the 'horrible news' link. It has the mayor speaking and he just said this about having boats ready to resue people:

"Thank god god is working with us."

Why is it, with some people, when something bad happens (like a hurricane) god never gets credit but when something good happens (like people rescueing others) its always becuase of god?
