BARROW, Alaska, June 27 (UPI) -- A grizzly bear mauled and killed a man and woman at their riverside camp site near Barrow, Alaska.



Rafters going down the Hulahula River told police late Saturday afternoon they spotted a grizzly ransacking the site. When they attempted to go ashore, the bear charged at them, and they sped off to call for help.

A North Slope Borough Search and Rescue helicopter was dispatched, and located the camp site around midnight. The bear fled, but was tracked and shot to death.

Police would not release the identity of the man and woman until family was notified. The victims were in their late 50s or early 60s, and had been on a kayaking expedition, KTUU-TV of Anchorage reported.

The bear's body was sent to Fairbanks for a necropsy Monday, and officials said they would attempt to retrieve any human remains.

The bear deserves to be respected, if you want to play with fire be prepared to get burned. The bear didn't walk into their living room and decide to make camp, they walked into his.
