So...I'm wanting to go on a diet.
I know that I need to quit eating fried foods...but what else would you all suggest?

Stay away from heavy sugar, no more chocolate bars and the like.
Do not snack in between meals.
You play tennis, so don't worry about exercise.
Keep to liquids alot, but avoid the bad ones (coffee, soda) instead drink water and juices.
All in all, diet food/drink is expensive and tastes really bad. You will never catch me drinking some diet soda. Instead of sacrificing taste, sacrifice portions; eat less (1500 calories instead of 2000 a day)

I actually like diet soda...and I love coke zero, so thats not really a problem.
Thanks for those tips too!

On exercise, you should really be able to eat anything you want, just so long as you exercise enough so you do not become overweight.
Always stretch beforehand for a good 5-10 minutes, make the workout longer than 30 minutes, and always do a cool down.
Involve weights and running in your workout;playing a sport is also very good for the body.
Just avoid becoming:

Eat once a day like me! lol, I don't really try to only eat once a day, but I usually get up in time for dinner, and then stay up until 4am and then get up in time for dinner the next day...pretty bad for my health, but I'm 5'10 and 133pounds...rather thin. But yeah...ummm, I've never had to be on a diet my entire life, so I can't help you! What about TRIMSPA babe! hahahaha, nawww...ummm....in order to take off the pounds you need to eat smaller portions, better quality food, and you need to GO TO THE GYM at least 4 times a week. Working out is just as important as eating healthy, unless you're me of course :)

sleeping over half the day, eating only one meal, not exercising-
Whoa OD, thats not healthy.
And also: let me point out there is a difference between being thin ("oh, no need to work out") and being fit.

I go clubbing on the weekends and, well, I typically walk all over downtown Portland throughout the nights...blocks and blocks and blocks and blocks...but yeah...I mean, it is summer so I guess that's why I sleep so much. But, I never have 3 meals a day. 2 at the most.

Shedding pounds depends on only one thing: If caloric intake is greater than calories burned, you will gain fat. If intake is less than calories burned, you will lose fat. That simple. Notice I didn't say "weight"...you can start exercising and actually gain weight because of the muscle. That's why things like the BMI aren't accurate.

Agreed...it messes up your blood sugar by shooting up and then it plummets it. It also causes other unhealthy chemical reactions that strain your body.

Disagree in a HUGE way. You need to keep your blood sugar at a constant. The best way to do this is to eat smaller meals more often. You will also increase your calorie burn since as soon as you eat you increase your metabolism. Avoiding or skipping meals actually decreases your metabolism and causes the body to try to store calories. Choosing healthy snacks is the key.
Keep to liquids alot, but avoid the bad ones (coffee, soda) instead drink water and juices.
Agree except limit the juice it high in calories and also only drink the juice without added sugar.
eat less (1500 calories instead of 2000 a day)
Disagree... as a middle aged female eating 1500 calories a day I can lose a pound a week without working out. 1500 caloires for a growing teen is not nearly enough...google as search for a site where you can input your height and healthy weight and activity level, it will give you a calorie base.
I work out 3 to 4 hours a week and I can easily maintain my weight with 2000 to 2200 a day...and that is a lot of food.

If you are going to snack in between meals, be sure to make the meals tiny, not much larger than the snacks.
Keep to more natural juices, agreed Sal
As for the caloric intake comment, first off Jerejere may not be in a full fledged state of pubescent growth, diets change. Plus, Jere is trying to LOSE weight, so eating less is a key.

What kind of strains are you talking about? I eat vastly too much sugar every day. The only thing i notice is that im always tired and have no motivaton at all to do anything because of that.

Well that sounds like a problem, perhaps you have an addiction to it. Careful, diabetes can be horrible to develop.

There could be many reasons for feeling chronically tired from emotional to physical...but certainly sugar could be one of the culprits. I love dessert, I mean I looooooooooooooooove that sugary stuff. For me, it puts me high and then crashes me which makes me want more. If I indulge, it becomes an endless cycle... eat sugar get high, crash, want more...eat, crash, crave. That is one problem. It is almost an addictive cycle.
But, Loki one of the worst things it does is place a huge burden on your immune system. Basically your immune system controls the health of your body from flu, to arthritis to cancer. When you immune system is compromised you are vulnerable to a host of things.
And as Evakian has said it can mess your system enough that diabetes becomes a possibility although there is a genetic component to that as well.
Basically all carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars before they are absorbed so eating sugary food adds unnecessary sugar to your body.
Also remember when reading labels, fructose, glucose, and galactose are all sugars. It is complicated but important to understand how the body processes food. I do not consider myself the best eater but I am still probably better than 80% of the people around me and that is scary. We are becoming a food addicted/obese society...we will die from it if we do not adjust our diets while most of the rest of the world dies of starvation. Ironic really... excess and deficiency!
Are you overweight at all or is your body using what you consume?

You could always fast, or go on a liquid diet for awhile, to train your stomach to accept smaller portions.....worked like a charm for me.....
based on the last thread I drink too much pop.....I been eating calcium supplements, to make up for it...

Yeah that makes sense because when I was your age I could eat everything and anything and always maintain my weight...thus I got into the chocolate bars and pop, etc... We just finished dinner and just writing about sweet stuff makes me crave it. Just try to cut back on the sugar thing and increase your veggies and fruit...the food that we eat really does affect us mentally and emotionally as well as physically and some people are more affected than others.
Since I cut down (a bit) :D on the sweets and got into the whole herbal thing I feel way better and my energy has increased a lot! Plus hair and nails grow waaaaaaaaay faster...it is noticeable.

Yeah fasting may work temporarily but most people just need a balanced diet that they can follow every day. No one should really "diet". Eating is a lifestyle. Exercise is also crucial. And as much water as possible... just keep a bottle with you at all times and sip on it. Today I have had 3 bottles or six cups so far. I am now drinking wine which dehydrates the body... :D everything I like does something bad... I will have to consume more water this evening to balance that.
Just walking down the street or at the mall I have never seen so many fricking obese people in my life... it is becoming disgusting!
Regardless, you look great so no worries!

Jere, what a time to start a diet...as I am doing the same thing!
I found a website that would not only give hints and tips, but serve as a confidence booster towards losing weight. Good luck to both of us!
