There's an old riddle that goes: What do you get when you give a reporter two facts and a deadline? The answer is: A trend.
Well, folks, by that standard, we've got ourselves a trend.

The Harris Poll is out today, showing President Bush's approval rating down sharply over the past two months to 40 percent. Just two days ago, the American Research Group also found it down sharply, to 36 percent.

In both cases, those are all-time lows for Bush that put him in dangerously unpopular territory. And the results lead inescapably to the conclusion that the American people are deeply unhappy with the war in Iraq and blame the president.

The Wall Street Journal reports: "President Bush's job approval ratings are at their lowest point of his presidency as only 40% of U.S. adults have a favorable opinion of his job performance and 58% have a negative opinion, according to a Harris Interactive poll.

"This is a decline from just two months ago in June when the president's ratings were 45% positive and 55% negative. Much of this decline can be tied to the public's opinion on important issues. The war in Iraq has climbed to the top of the most important issues list and the economy is now viewed as the second most important issue, according to the poll."

Harris Interactive adds: "Americans are also less satisfied with the way things are going in the country now as compared to in June. A majority (59%) of adults say things in the country have gotten pretty seriously off on the wrong track and 37 percent believe things are moving in the right direction. In June, those numbers were 38 percent who said things were moving in the right direction and 55 percent who said things had headed off on the wrong track."

An American Research Group poll released Monday found Bush's overall approval rating down to 36 percent in August, from 42 percent in July.

And more polls will be out soon. I'm told that Gallup, for instance, is in the field now and should have results in the next few days.
The Harris poll was in the field from Aug. 9 to 16. The most recent Gallup Poll, conducted Aug. 5 to 7, had Bush's approval down at 45 percent -- and even more notably, showed that 56 percent of Americans said they want some or all troops withdrawn from Iraq now.

Shades of the titanic!

Does it really matter? The man's not up for reelection. And unless the numbers drop below 20% or so, we won't see anything come of it.

I know your president can only do two terms in a row...our prime minister can basically set themself up for life if people are stupid enough to keep electing them... which is pretty standard even after they get caught red handed siphoning money to all their chums in industry...

Is it two terms for life, or can they take a break and run again later?

By the way echo, I don't know if it was a Freudian slip but when I first read the title here I thought it was "Poll finds Bush stinking"

1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President, when this Article was proposed by the Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Rush Limbaugh is right on this one. You say, polls are used to make news. First step, report a bunch of bad news for the President (Cindy Sheehan's shindig and Iraqi insurgents and Iraqi Consititutional problems are good examples) THEN take a poll after all the bad news has been spread out about a foot thick, when Bush's numbers do slip, BAMMO! You just manufactored a news story. Add in the bit about Bush's popularity slipping into "dangerous lows"and the news is that Bush's Iraq war is far more unpopular than ever. Which is going to make Republican Congressmen worried about the '06 midterm elections.

Yawn.

The problem is that we live in a 24/7 news cycle. News can fly around the world in seconds. We are getting a blow by blow account of what's happeneing in Iraq. When you have this kind of situation, you are going to get this roller coaster ride of poll numbers that peak, then crash, then peak again. If Bin Laden and Zarqawi were caputered tomorrow, Bush's poll numbers would be in the 70s and the news reporters would be gritting their teeth having to divulge that bit of good news. Just watch the fun! You'll see I'm right.

Dammit.

it just doesnt matter at this point though, does it ? he made the second term. that is all he wanted. he can just fuck everything up now, set it up for a dem to win the next election ( dont say he cant do it ), and the dem will take ALL of the blame for this mess ! ( by the way, china and india only brought production up 2%, so there goes the demand argument for oil prices !) i knew we would REALLY be screwed if he got in another term, im no prophet, but i wasnt wrong on this !

Korg,

Out of curiousity, just exactly what Bush is doing that is "screwing up his second term" that's different than what he was doing his first term?

Guffaw.

Good question, given that his running of the country in both terms has been, so far, abysmal.

Well, from a ravenously secular anti-capitalist word-twister standpoint, i suppose...
