Curiously, What kind of martial arts would you think suitable for being able to subdue and if needed seriously injure another person in real world situations, quickly and without harm to myself.

Im thinking Mu Tai (not sure of spelling), tae kwon do, boxing.

Reason being that im pretty sure that id get my ass handed to me in a fight and since i have a decent amount of expendable income right now and weekday evenings free, i figured it would be a good thing to get into.

Im not all that interested in compititions and the like, though i know they will push you in that direction and the challenges would be a good progress learnt indicator.

I dont pick fights with anyone and will always seek a peaceful resolve however if they simply wont listen or, wish to fight, then I want the expertise to be able to bring them down and at least leave them with a physical reminder not to be a prick.

Simple: don't get in fights

Martial arts are not learned just so you can go around pwning punks, the best way to win a fight is not get in one.
Martial arts more function as a physical and mental exercise that improves you, carries over to your everyday life to help, soothes or is just a way to be productive with time.

But, if you must, if you can find a Jeet Kune Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist) instructor, go under the tutelage of that sensei. Jeet Kune Do (dough) was developed by Bruce Lee at his dojos, it is fast, effective, and is full of quick, choppy movements and counterattacks. It is smooth, but doesn't look it. This style will help whip you into shape, as well as whip any aggressor very quickly, try it out if you are very physically fit.

I have taken a few lesson in self defence over the years, they all seem to have good points. I also know of folks that carry a black belt and can compete without problem, but when the real sh** hits the fan they freeze up. I quess it is like anything, just cause ya got it doesn't mean ya know what to do with it.

If you can, find someone that will give you a 1 on 1 lesson you'll learn more.

Having had a look at Evaks stuff it seems its truly combat orientated and a number of the schools seem to teach a "If it wouldnt work in a street enviroment we wont teach it" stance, which is good.

Location is important since im not using a car at the moment and Im saving for a bike

Loki, in my life I had to handle quite a few people in hand-to-hand situations. My advantage was diversified training.
I had training from the FBI, several hand-to-hand experts, the military, some oriental stuff.

This diversification in training, and the experience of situations I have been in, left me with a mixture of reactions that no one expected.

The down-fall of one discipline is that your reaction can be anticipated.

Any good self defense course would help. The basic moves can help protect you in given situations.

I remember one black belt guy that I simply hit up- side the head with a gas nozzle, that ended the situation.

for me personally, i can. i practice a mixture of boxing, wing chun kung fu, and tea kwon do. i do not stick to one fight style. and i follow bruce lee's philosophy. follow nothing and everything. if you ever watch reality fighting, where people are getting their asses kicked for sure, you will notice that the ones who get their asses kicked the most are those trained only in tae kwon do.
if against a ground fighter, stay away from him being able to grab you or using a move that can get him to hold you.
my fave is from wing chun. go for the eyes, make them flinch, and then kick in the shins and make them flinch and then beat the fuck out of them.

With anytype of fighting you need to learn the hot spots, once you have found them you will kick arse. Most any experienced fighter will also be able to avoid conflict, this is the best way to handle it. The other thing in defending yourself, don't be a nice guy go for the kill. Back in the day it was alot of fun to get into a good ole fashion bar room brawl. Now you have to be carefull of some arse pulling a gun knife etc... I no longer get into fights unless I'm ready to kill the other person, it is better to walk away.
