Equilibrium. Saw that just the other day. It was fantastic. So much better than the Matrix, and with a storyline that doesn't have to be dragged out through two shitty sequels. The movie does look low budget at times, but the absolutely... perfect... fight scenes make up for any other imperfections. The very best gun fight I have ever seen in a movie lies at the end of this masterpeice. Not only that, but it includes the coolest sword fight in a movie to this date. A sword fight that lasts a whole of two seconds. It resembles 1984 with a few takes from Brave New World and one reference to Dune that stands out. It's just... fabulous. I claim it to be underrated since I had never even heard of it before a few weeks ago.
There is one that I would like to claim as underrated however I've actually heard of quite a few people that have seen it. I'm speaking of Requiem for a Dream. Great movie. It has some of the most interesting cinematography I've ever seen. However, the one that is hardly known in comparison to it would be Darren Aronofsky earlier film, Pi. That one is just... intriguing.

Pi, Equilibrium, and Requiem for a Dream are on my lists also
Although i wish Equi. was bigger budget and more well made and wider released, it would have smashed at the box office. Poor marketing and lack of resources was its downfall, all and all GREAT film with meaning.
Capt Preston- "and why do you live"
Mary- "to feel"

i put Road to Perdition here because not enough attention was paid to this wonderful story about the epic qualities of life, fantastic performances.
Last of the Mohicans is one of the greatest adventure stories and tied with romance, although it was critically ravaged, i loved the score, action, chemistry, and scenery.
Donnie Darko by far deserves his place on this list. It is my favorite movie because it works on so many levels. The plot, acting, music, and meanings are so complex. It works as a comedic satire, dark drama, and life discoveries movie. Perfect in many ways. Very little attention or money was put into this, but it deserves it.

Down with love was a very silly psy-spoof of 50s romantic comedies, not very much recognized, so that can be here.
But Moulin Rouge was nominated for all sorts of awards and huge critical success.
It's a Wonderful Life makes on Top Movies lists and is well renowned.
Those two aren't really "underrated", they are held in very high esteem

It's a wonderful life is one of the most celebrated films of all time. I dont exactly consider that underatted.
I would have to add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind to the list. If you havent seen it - do yourself a favor.

Guess What: just because you are attracted to the male lead (Ewan McGregor) doesn't make them good movies
Moving on...The Mission was pretty underrated, as was BOUND (great one)

The duel between Gurney Halleck and Paul Atreides in the begining of the book. Paul has his dagger to Gurney's throat and thinks he's won but Gurney has his dagger to Paul's gonads. Same as with the duel between Brandt and Preston. Brandt thought he won, but Preston got his nuts.

Mystery Men. Sure, it's a B-rate comedy. But it's ability to mimick and embrace the comic book genre is impressive, not to mention plenty of laughs.
"We've got a date with Destiny...and it looks like she ordered the lobster." - The Shoveler
Also, how about American Psycho? Christian Bale's best performance, and a horrific satire that makes you think.
"I...ha, I've killed ALOT OF PEOPLE!" - Patrick Bateman
And finally, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. This is arguably the ultimate Batman movie, and it's animated in the classic Bruce Timm style to boot.
"You're not smiling, Joker. I thought you found death amusing."

"Road to Perdition" is superb. IMO, the best crime movie ever, and that's saying something...the scene where Paul Newman tells Sullivan-"I'm glad it's you" is one of the saddest ever filmed. A masterpiece, wonderful, haunting music too--this movie will gain ground as the years go by. Shows how "glamourous" a life of crime truly is, unlike the overhyped and overrated, not to mention, FAKE, "Godfather" films.

Road to Perdition is awseome....but with that cast, how could it not?

Godfather is very good, it just lacks a bit in style caused by the music and cinematography that Road/Perd. had.
Michael Sullivan:He murdered Annie and Peter!
John Rooney: There are only murderers in this room! Michael! Open your eyes! This is the life we chose, the life we lead. And there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven.
Michael Sullivan: Michael could.
John Rooney: Then do everything that you can to see that that happens.
That was one of the best scenes ever, Newman and Hanks earn their place on the creme of the crop list.

I think that Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was underrated. Most people complained that it had little to do with the games, but it was still very, very pretty.

"She was so ugly it looked like she fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch coming down"

Really??? I thought Coppola was on ectasy when he made that movie. Although Gary Oldman was a great Dracula. Plus i do not believe it was underrated, didn't it get fairly positive reviews?

It probably did but I never looked into it. When I got to watch it for the first time...it was a couple years old so I'm not really sure.
And Gary Oldman was a great Dracula. I have watched a ton of movies with him in them and he is just a great actor altogether.
I just like the movie since it has everything in it: it is a love story with a kick. :)
