Why is movie theater attendance dropping? many movies expected to be hits ended up being flops (The Island) or did not perform to expectations (War of the Worlds).
After reading an article on this it was conluded that people do not like the commercials at movies, or the price of the ticket and decide renting/buying is cheaper.
Another article in the same paper (houston chronicle) stated that people do not complain to the theater about the commercials.
and ANOTHER article mentioned that DVD sales/rentals are down for expected hits (The Incredibles, Srek 2)
So another argument is that movies are just bad nowadays- Cinderella Man, BatmanBegins, Layer Cake and others were all ciritically acclaimed like every year. So how can that be?
George Lucas said that movies are a social experience, people to to see movies with other people and that will never change. But in this day and age it is almost all teenage kids. Perhaps there is a phobia of adults people to bring their children to be around teenagers or older people with a phobia of them.
Why is this important? Box office receipts and DVD sales determine what genres will be made, what series will be continued. What directors/actors/writers will find work and so on. So yes, although films are an art form but money still plays a major role in how its made
WHAT IS WRONG?????
Hollywood is whithering away. What are your theories? (also take this time to talk about good films [theater or DVD/VHS doesnt matter] to help improve sales, people need to spend money, but i think it should be spent on good movies)
