What do you think are the top 5 rock songs of all time? There are so many to choose from and this is a highly subjective list. But lets hear it!

I don't think these are the top five all time. But these are five where I reach for the dial every time and crank her up...

* The Immigrant Song
* Riders on the Storm
* American Woman (the long version is best)
* Bad to the Bone
* Southern Man

My top 5, in no particular order:

Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix
Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones
Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin
My Generation - The Who
Layla - Derek and the Dominos

I agree with Jester on Layla, and add four more:
Baba O'Riley - The Who
If You Love Someone Set Them On Fire - The Dead Milkmen
Dream On - Aerosmith
Hey You - Pink Floyd

Heartbreak Hotel--Elvis

Green Onions--Booker T and the MGs

Pretty Woman---Roy Orbison

As you can see I'm going WAY back with these--to REAL rock and roll, IMO. All the best rand r songs are short, too.

China Grove - Doobie Brothers
Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

And pretty much any Boston song pre-Third Stage. (Yes, I am a Boston nut.)

For a conservative Yankees fan, you have surprisingly excellent taste. (I'm a More than a Feeling/Peace of Mind/Hitch a Ride/Don't Look Back guy myself. Yes, I have four favorites.)

It is really hard to name the five best rock songs of all times. Rock and Roll covers such a broad spectrum that you really have to name the best songs within different areas of rock.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is great as is, All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix, Old Time Rock and Roll by Bob Segar, Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Hotel California by The Eagles, but then you have Blitzkrieg Bop, by The Ramones, Lick It, by 20 Fingers, Boy Like You by the Donnas. They are among the best in punk or garage rock. There is instrumental rock with such hits as Topsy Part II by Cosy Cole, Raunchy by Duane Eddy, Red Rier Rock by Johnny and the Hurricanaes and Guitar Boogie by Stevie Ray Vaughan. You have rockabilly and Ronnie Hawkins doing Forty Days, Carl Perkins with Rocket 88, Wanda Jackson singing Slippin' and slidin', and The Reverend Horton Heat with Bales of Cocaine. Shag has Billy Ward and the Dominoes with 60 Minute Man, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters singing Baby Let Me Bang Your Box, Chairman of the Board with Loverboy, and the Fantastic Shakers and Don't Look Good Naked Any More. The Recnex are great on Cotton Eye Joe, Venga Boys with We Like To Party, Brooklyn Bounce doing Boom, Boom, Boom, and Gillette and Sex Tonight in the Dance/House genre. Then there is my favorite, Doowop where the great songs are too numerous to list.l There's Speedo by the Cadillacs, You Cheated You Lied by the Dell Vikings, Earth Angel by the Penguins, There's A Moon Out Tonight by the Capris, Cry, Cry, Cry, by the Jive Five, The Stroll by the Diamonds, Daddy's Home by the Duprees, Babalu's Wedding Day by the Eternals and Duke of Earl lby Gene Chandler.

No one should ever be asked to limit himself to naming just the five greatest rock songs. It is impossible because there are so many, many great choices.
