I guess the U. S. will try to retain control of the internet.

The governments site that controls the internet appears to be at:

Woah, wait, I'm confused. There are thirteen "root" computers? What exactly do they do? DNS for the .com domain or something?

EDIT: Ah, I get it now. Thanks, Slashdot! http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/07/01/0618250&from=rss

I saw a few of these server banks at a big datacenter in Miami earlier this year - pretty cool. There was a screen on front with a graph of hits per second. I can't remember the number but it was something like 200 million hits per second.

Everytime you type in a web address (like allforums.net) the first step is to locate the IP address (real web address) of that domain. This is done via a domain name server, so all internet traffic goes through these servers when you first request a website.

The administration probably wants to limit the world's access to porn.

Actually, when you think about it, the government maintains a comprehensive list of all the porn on the internet. (along with everything else)

This is one of those times I am behind the decision. Let me explain my feelings.

If we give up control then we may have a less responsible group (U.N.) running this system and probably have limited or reduced access. ( I know the US is not real responsible but I would trust them more than lets say a group like OPEC)

Security is another concern, not that this is very secure but for commerce I dont know if I would want an outsider controlling what we depend on to keep half of this country running.

As said at slashdot if others dont like this arraingement they can set up their own dns system.

the DNS holds no information about a sites content - it just maps the domain to an IP. This is freely available info to anybody in the world - so it's no secret list of sites being used to track anything.

Also - the 13 root servers are not all in the US and apart from the ones hosted by NASA and the DOD the government doesn't really control them - they oversee them. All the root servers hold identical information.

A ns.internic.net VeriSign Dulles, Virginia, USA
B ns1.isi.edu ISI Marina Del Rey, California, USA
C c.psi.net Cogent Herndon, Virginia, USA
D terp.umd.edu University of Maryland College Park, Maryland, USA
E ns.nasa.gov NASA Mountain View, California, USA
F ns.isc.org ISC Palo Alto, California, USA
G ns.nic.ddn.mil U.S. DoD NIC Vienna, Virginia, USA
H aos.arl.army.mil U.S. Army Research Lab Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, USA
I nic.nordu.net Autonomica Stockholm
J VeriSign Dulles, Virginia, USA
K RIPE London
L ICANN Los Angeles
M WIDE Project Tokyo

For each root server the actual servers maybe spread all over the globe. The one I saw in Miami was (j)
