Ironically, one of her duties in Iraq is security. While she was protecting the troops, her home went unprotected. Her family says the damage was extensive, including the alarm and phone systems, plus some family photos were destroyed. Last month, burglars tried to break into McQuay's home in a foiled attempt, but this time they were successful.

On the battlefields of Iraq, a Gary, Indiana soldier fights for her country, but her sacrifice has her now fighting another battle on the homefront.

Seven months ago Specialist Terry McQuay was deployed to the war zone. The single mother left behind three children. It was her hope that their home in Gary would provide some stability while she was gone, but late last week it was broken into, heavily damaged and burglarized.

McQuay's grandfather discovered the crime.

"He went in and everything was straight ransacked, taken off the wall and everything thrown out of her closet, her kids' closets. They had been even in the attic. They took everything," said Mildred Whiteside, McQuay's sister.

Whiteside says the items stolen from the home includes priceless pieces, thousands of dollars in jewelry, some newly purchased children's clothes and a gun.

McQuay was very upset when she was told what happened.

"I started screaming and hollering. I was just devastated because I work too hard to take care of my children and put nice things in my home, and sacrificed, and came over here. And someone wants to break in my home?" said McQuay, via telephone from Iraq. McQuay thought she was coming home to access the situation, but late Wednesday she was told otherwise.

"My unit told me I could come home, and I started packing, but then they knocked on my door and said brigade said it's not a good enough excuse for you to come home, but we approve for you to come home, but brigade says you can't come home. It has to be a matter of life or death," said McQuay.

McQuay's family says they have done what they could to clean up the home, and they also filed a police report. But McQuay says it is very difficult to list specific items stolen because she cannot see the home to know what is missing, and her family doesn't know exactly what she had inside her home.

McQuay isn't scheduled to return home until November. She is deployed in Iraq with the 113th Engineer Battalion of the Indiana National Guard <end>
