Will Lester (AP) writes, “ Most U.S. residents don’t want to see the return of the military draft, although men, older people, and Republicans were most likely to say it’s a good idea”. Well not this Republican old man. He goes on to say, the military is in a recruiting slump. The Army repeatedly has missed its monthly recruiting goals this year, falling short by 42% in April. All four branches of the military service are having trouble attracting recruits to their reserve forces. (no kidding?). Can you imagine the gall of some parents saying they don’t want their sons and daughters sent home in a body bag. General John Abizad, told congress last Thursday that "the Iraqi insurgency is as active as it was six months ago and more foreign fighters are flowing in all the time". They don’t seem to be having any recruiting problems. We didn’t listen to our Generals in Vietnam either so why should we start now? Stay the course ‘W”. Donald will work out the minor details of firepower and people to pull the triggers. Does any one know if Halliburton has a contract for body bags? they seem to have one for every thing else.

Enlistment bonus is the main attraction right now.
The money seems good to young people that have not had much money at one time.
Visions of new cars, jewelry, etc., is making the several thousand dollar bonus attractive.

If enlistment by bribery does not work. Draft will take its place.

Right now you can't get a student loan without registering with selective service. One step short of a draft that could be taken would be to require military service before you could get a student loan. It wouldn't affect the children of the rich. No one would be compelled to join the military. It would just be neccessary if you wanted to have a decent job, and your parents aren't rich.

In a year or two, whether we like it or not, we are going to need soldiers. I think the powers to be figured this out in WWII, Vietnam and Korea. Doesn’t it go something like history repeats it self. I do not post accounts about random rightwingers and claim they represent anything. You are thinking about someone else, not me. The only time I chacterize such things is when it comes from government officials themselves, in particular BushCo.

Secondly, this war is about oil and profits and everyone knows it. What I am saying is that conserving gas would therefore be a very patriotic thing to do because it means less soldiers will have to go off and die to secure more oil around the world.

Thirdly, screw the democrats (almost all of them) they are nothing but another pro-corporate party pretending to be a spineless opposition while lining their pockets with the same money republicans take. However, they do not vote against everything "pro-military." Funny how you denounce democrats for denying things that you consider "pro-military" while you let Rummy, Bush etc off the hook for getting our troops killed for lies, without the proper equipment, without a decent (or any) plan, and without properly funded veterans centers.

Fourth, no one has a clue what the Iraqi patriots want. The terrorists (anyone killing innocent people) may want a Islamic state. Most of the fighters are native Iraqis fighting for thier homes. And most poeple prefer to be left in peace. It is only extremist tyrants that wish to control others, religion is just a convienent medium (also see: American Christian fascists)

Decka - Gay marriage has nothing to do with the word marriage and everything to do with the civil rights that accompany such. If you are against gay marriage then you are aginst them getting the same treatment as straights and therefore anti-gay. enough on that. we can discuss it on a million other thread further if you want.

The reason why I am against military action is the same reason why many I support many troops. The death of innocents. Those in the military voted to keep America safe. Attacking Iraq has the opposite effect posing as a breeding ground and recruitment tool for terrorists and allowing many non-conventional weapons to fall into their hands. However I cannot support any soldier who does not have the balls to support himself. Those who know this war is wrong but still go back to serve in it betray themselves. As I have stated before we have handed out and advertisd for girights.org at numerous recruiting centers and military bases.

I write out a post claiming that terrorists are hoping that the U.S. will lose the will to fight in Iraq and go home. Freethinker says he hopes so. I then accuse freethinker of supporting terrorists. Freethinker fires back that I'm an idiot and have a somewhat low reading comprehension. Tell me freethinker, what part of my post accusing you of supporting terrorism did I get wrong? You did state that you hope the terrorists in Iraq will kill enough people to turn the tide of American opinion against the war in Iraq. So what part did I get wrong, or do you just resort to name calling when you get nailed?


I then accuse echo of being in the same boat with freethinker, in that she also hopes terrorists will kill enough people to have support for the war in Iraq. And she informs me that Bush is the center of evil in the universe.


The only one who did respond thoughfully was guerilla. I think he's wrong, but at least he was able to come up with a good rubuttal.

You can tell you won an argument when the opposition resorts to name calling and changing the subject.

Actually, IMHO, it's our own troops that are hoping the U.S. will come to their senses, end this bullshit and bring them home. They're just not allowed to say it.
