Okay, after dinner we were channel flipping and stopped for a second on Oprah. We were captivated for an hour (I can't believe he got through an hour of Oprah) because we were so horrified by the program.
Child soldiers...over 310,000. Some as young as 7. The carry guns and kill on command.
Pedophilia in Romania because the people live on an average of $4.00 a day. A father tried to sell his son to an undercover newsman.
The States:estimated over 50,000 domestics slaves. Girls brought in from Africa to go to school. They never go to school and they are never paid a penny. Some are used as sex slaves.
Am I the ONLY one totally ignorant of such things...
I really didn't know...
In 1867 a slave would have cost $1000.00 which is equivalent to $40,000 in todays market. Now you can get a slave for as low as $40.00 or less if you want a child....

I see the occassional story along those lines, but they're so infrequent it's pretty much out of sight, out of mind. Which is of course exactly why they're able to get away with it. Very sad indeed.
Many things that we spoiled Americans would think atrocious occur daily in poor countries around the world.
Go to Bangkok today and you can buy a bj from an 8 year old girl for 20 bucks. Saw that on tv 2 days ago.
They had the hidden camera out and caught an American doctor seeking such on a frequent trip schedule.
India, buy a young daughter for 50 dollars. Yes, you get to keep her. Daughters cost money to marry away and furnish a dowry, cheaper to sell her while she is a child.
Slavery is still alive and well in many parts of the world.

Unless you live there, you don't really know what everybody goes through. Everybody has it good here...much different in Romania.

Hold on folks lets not paint America as perfect, there is alot of sick twisted sh** going on here as well. What happens is that most folks don't want to hear about it so they don't!!!

it's not whether or not it happens here, because it does, though I'm pretty sure much less frequently than in other countries. the problem is that we have the power to try and stop it, and we don't.

The creator of the Romanian documentary said he is supposed to soon air on CNN. There was this one 11 year old girl who lives in the underground... she came dancing towards the camera stoned on some paint thinner. She was waving her arms and dancing for the camera. That image will haunt me for decades.

Yes one of the things mentioned was... if are a woman and you were lucky enough to be born in the US then you are luckier than 90% of the women in the world...
50,000 domestic slaves living in the states means they live among us..perhaps at the neighbour's house. If it happens in the States, it happens in Canada too. Only awareness will end this, and no one seems aware... me included.

My wife watches Oprah & sometimes I see it - it is actually quite a good show. Oprah raises attention to many issues & creates change due to her media strength. I've seen some of those stories on Oprah before.
Lots of bad stuff happens in this world - here and abroad. We are not immune from tragic situations here.
Whammy - It's false to think that the US can fix these situations. We can help, but only by individual desire to help. If you really want to help get on a plane and go help. Take your pick of places to go - there are a million destinations including probably a few blocks from your house. It's not fair to sit back and say well the US could fix this. The US cannot fix it here - the US cannot fix human nature.

Drew you are correct it has to happen on the individual plane. The problem is that there are still alot of sickos out there that will take advantage of another.

Part of fixing it means making more folks aware of it. Making folks aware of this stiuation & almost everything else going on on this planet means having a free press and free access to the media. Providing that sometimes means kicking some ass.

I agree, bringing more awareness to this is a great start. But the mainstream media only reports what the GOP wants you to hear.

Echo, can you, for ONCE not try to blame the GOP for the evils that infest the world? The LAST thing I thought of when reading these posts was the DNC, Hillary Clinton or anybody else on the Left. One of these days you just might realize that they are problems here in this world that transcend politics.
As far as slaves are concerned, I've read such reports from time to time, mostly about girls being lured away from their homeland and used in the sex industry, and they anger me. Such rage I don't care to post about for fear of being seen as being rabid over a subject nobody else knows or cares about. I think anybody having ANYTHING to do with any kind of slavery should be shot. Period. No excuses, no appeals, no sop stories about a sorry childhood or any of that. Some things are better off not tolerated, and slavery is most definately one of them.

ES, I agree with you about the awarness and true media coverage. The problem with the media of today is that they like to spice things up, if the story is boring or slow then they love to throw in their little twist on things. The media has turned into a movie or ratings show, the heck with the true story lets add this or that. What ever happened to just reporting the news?
